I wish we would hire a coach with several years of HC coaching experience on some level. At least you would have a feeling that maybe the person wouldn't be learning how to be a HC on the job. Well, that's just my opinion.
Our AD has made it clear that she's going to be looking at people with 1A experience, not exclusive but for the most part. I have to give her the benefit of the doubt because she knows more about building athlethic programs than I do.
Speaking of 1A salaries, alot of these guys make decent money and some do so so. Most of the big conferences paid decent money, but I doubt the mid and lower conferences have tons of cash to throw around.
Here's what the University of Iowa is paid their coaches:
Kirk Ferentz(HC) 1.2mil Ken O'Keefe (OC&QB) 171,000 Norm Parker (DC&LB) 171,000 Ron Aiken (DL) 154,000 Lester Erb ((Receiver&SpecialT) 132,000 Carl Jackson (RB) 142,000 Eric Johnson (TE) 99,000 Reese Morgan (OL) 137,000 Phil Parker (DB) 137,000
By the Ron Aiken was making 99,000 3 years ago.
I don't think the Univ of UConn pay their coaches this much.

Most of these D-1 programs don't pay the huge salaries to their assistants that everyone may think they do. The highest paid guys will be at your traditional top 15 programs and those that do get the six figures have been there for quite some time.
Few people realized that no one on Frank Beamers staff at Va Tech was paid more than $95,000 despite their being together for nearly 13 years as group.
They only recently received their 25 percent increase as part of Beamer's new long term extension which he signed just before the season started.

Of course, there's base salary and then there's the perks and freebies that supplement that salary. To date many I-AA programs haven't found a way to supplement salaries like the I-A programs have. Some I-AAs do have t.v. deals and the like. By and large the pay difference between a I-A assistant, a I-AA head man and a d-2 head man is negligible, save the perks.

I saw on the news that Maryland's CHANCELLOR only makes about 150k base salary, but he makes about 500-600k in private money. Can the same thing go for these coaches? I'm sure if Norries and some of these other coaches are making the big private dollars on the side, we are pretty much sitting ducks. Hell, the best we can offer on the side is prolly a parking space and a free aggie-one lunch card at Williams caf!
That said, the more I hear about Mr. Phillips, the more I like him.

I think the ideal coach for us is someone who not only has head coaching experience but has also shown he is a proven winner. Problem is, that could cost more than we want to spend. For example, suppose Doug Williams was interested in the job but wanted 175,000. Could we do it?

Hawk, how did you get this info? I like to see more for benchmark purposes. We will have to make a significant increase in Coach Small's salary just to attract a D-1A position coach.
I sure would like the Ron Aiken's escalator when it comes merit time for me.

A77, The state of Iowa makes all employees salaries available check out these 2 web sites (The 2nd site seems to be more up to date, so I may have short changed Aiken's salary several thousand dollars) He has done well since receiving the AFCA award and winning 2 big ten championships. www.press-citizen.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/99999999/SALARIES/50407002data.dmregister.com/statesalaries/salaries.php

Scott,
Man, can you leave my name out of it? Please.
Besides, if you'd been around the last time the job was open it would take you a week to brush the taste of foot out of your mouth from that statement.

No suggestions at all. After 4XL posted Ron Aiken was a member of the Class 77 I decided to check for obvious reasons. I found and posted the tidbits under the mistaken impression that others may be interested
But the point is we can't afford Ron Aikens.
