And for us... the A&T Swagger, Man (just being a plain old student) we could go into any gym and be Kings! Brothers would go to the game without a way back and didn’t care. lol! I did not realize it but "It was mad confidence" back then. The Sisters in that city would just gravitate to the A&T area. This thread killed me! folks may think you're joking about not having a ride back but i know its true because i was one of 'em! as a freshman, me and my roommate went downtown and caught a trailways bus to winston salem for an aggie game. the game was at the old coliseum in winston. we had no ride from the winston bus station to and from the coliseum, so we "walked" to wssu's campus from the trailways bus station and caught one of their city buses that took wssu's students to and from the game. we covered up our aggie t-shirts so no one would know we were from a&t. we got to the coliseum and no one on the buses knew we were aggies. we won the game. after the game we caught the buses back to campus, again we hid our aggie t-shirts. as the buses were loading, we were quietly sitting together trying not to be noticed. then all of sudden, of all people, my "homegirl" who attended wssu got on our bus. we tried to turn away so she couldn't see us but it didn't work. as the bus pulled off, she saw us sitting down and called us out like a mug! we managed to make it back to campus but we barely made it off the bus! lawd, they heckled the hail outta us! we couldn't say much 'cause we were the only aggies. but once we got back on campus and off the bus, we talked big time smack and literally ran to the trailways bus station! ;D

Don't forget about Hal Royster from Yonkers, NY, a 6-8 small forward who could handle the ball on the break in traffic with an unstoppable soft fadeaway jumper up to 20 feet or could post you up and take your lunch money.
This guy played like a gazelle, no effort, no wasted energy. He lit up Howard for 28 points and 16 boards in a double OT win in Burr and had stuck Morgan two nights before for 26 and 12 at their place. Silky smooth.
That kid could flat ball.

Aggie E, Look, I have got to get back to work, but even the guys riding the bench had that "something"...remember 7'1'"Scooby Do"?.. who would come in during clean up time? I saw Earl Dancy beat him 'one on one' up at High Rise. But yo, we would back Him and call for Him on the floor against the foe.....High Rise..remember that court? Ah...that was a showcase. But Scooby would reject your stuff if you did not come correct. LOL. And how about Kenny Smalls...who would 'pound the ball' while dribbling...every time is see Kenny "the jet" Smith on TV I think of Smalls and the swagger. That was A&T. We could hold our heads up high. My Mom had PE under the great John B.McLendon...I had PE under the great Cal Erwin ( Brother of Baseball great Monte). Yo, Thats was A&t!

Gene Littles had to great teams during his two year tenure. I was wondering when someone would mention his players and teams. He had a great point guard from DC in Joe Brawner, a passer, scorer and defender (could not play for Corbett). He complemented Sparrow as well as the big front line of Royster, Pipkin and Brown (Temple transfer).
Many of the players listed on this thread were great players of their era or time at A&T, but not over the long and great historical period of Aggie basketball. That period was from the fifties through the eighties or early to mid-nineties.

Aggie One, yea Royster to me was like Jamal Wilkes or a Alex English. You are right , He did not waste energy. He played like a pro. Not a lot of shake & bake in one place. Oh, and Bird did have a rainbow...teardrop jumper...ahhh. It's funny, that joint could get a crowd going like a dunk could! It would just hang & hang boom. The reminded me of a tape played in the student union of the MEAC Tourn., that they showed on an old spool format when Spruill had to shoot almost "laying down"...fading away..double clutching against Marvin Webster. Or even throwing a hook shot on him. He was a crazy shot maker & dribbler. Back then Marvin Webster would just start a fast break off of your stuff...if it was weak.

I saw Bird light up Central in Durham for about 36! pj, I believe I was at that game too. I think Gene Littles was the coach then. Bird broke loose and started throwing up all kinds of crazy stuff....and it was going in! I remember him running down the sideline in front of the Central bench motioning for them to call timeout! Man...those were the days! ;D And I heard Bird gave Central's crowd the finger too...it was crazy that night! Today, that would meant a riot on either side....the Central crowd was awe struck..... ;D

To all that have posted, I appreciate the history lesson!!! I knew A&T was good back then, but the passion that you all speak of Aggie BBall is impressive. Damn shame I was around during the Wide Legs Hunter days.

pj, you mentioned earl dancy and the courts at high rise...you da man ! ! did you play back there too? i am surprised i never got hurt back there...it was at high rise that i first saw james sparrow..he jumped out of a taxi cab at the ymca in his jeans, and played the next game...i was a freshman then, and somebody said, Bird, and i got my first glimpse of the legend...
i met all of those guys during my tenure at a&t, but the games behind high rise were special; the guys would rather play outside than in moore gym..i guess because the girls would come outside...thanks for the walk down memory lane guys..

Remember Keith Davis from N.Y., played back with "Bird". Keith was not on the level with Bird when it came to all around skills but he had more "hops" than any player thats ever played at A&T. He could leap out of the gym. Keith comes back to A&T every homecoming.
