Aggie One, remember before the MEAC Tournament was moved to the Greensboro Coliseum it was played at Duke's Cameron Indoor. At that time Maryland Eastern Shore had a really good team when they had Joe Pace, who played in the NBA for a while. Well anyway I believe it was the first year of the MEAC and A&T and Eastern Shore played in the championship game. One of the best games I have ever seen in the MEAC when "June" Harris hit the winning bucket at the buzzer. What a game!!!

I was there with my older brother who was a senior a A&T then. That was a great game and a big time upset because they were nationally ranked at #20th and went very deep into the NIT that same year.
I think the best one for me is still Corvin Davis' steal on WSSU's top guard underneath the basket when he appeared to be going for an easy layup with seconds left and then hitting 3/4 quarter court buzzer beater by in '88 against "Big House" Gaines and his very talented 20 game plus win WSSU (his last really good team) squad in Corbett. I've never seen our fans rush the court like that after game before or since.
That '88 team was truly special to watch. They had it all.
A 60 footer and nothing but net. And I mean nothing but net!!!

A1 I'm pretty sure that was the 89 team? That play by Corvin Davis was the greatest play I've ever witnessed....college or pro. Not only did he strip the kid from making a snow bird to win the game but then he fires the ball from beyond half court and hits nothing but net.

I would sure like to see that play.

I remember a game against W-S at the coliseum, don't remember the year, but both teams were close to 20 wins late in the season. Bird came down on the left side with the ball on a fast break, threw the ball of the glass and dunked with one hand, the crowd went crazy, of course we won.

Yeah, Moore Gym was the spot. If the football players came in the gym and some students were sitting in there seats ( everybody knew where the FB team sat) they would literally toss them out of the seats. I remember one game in Moore, don't remember the team, but A&T had to get some walk-on's to make out the team due to some player's being ineligible. Elsworth Turner QB on the FB team was one of the walk-on's playing PG. On a fast break Elsworth went down court and dunked on someone. Man, the whole FB team went off. They ran out on the floor celebrating and held up the game for about 15 minutes. Man, it was wild in Moore that night. Yeah...I remember that night....boy what good old days ;D ;D ;D Man, y'all just took me back!

Yeah, I remember that Corvin Davis shot against WSSU. WSSU had their pep band in Corbett that night. It was rocking in Corbett and "the shot" just capped off a great game. I am not sure, but did we still have that funky looking rubberized looking floor when that game was played? I think N.C. State had the same type floor at that time.

Yep we did. The guys used to wear elbow, arm, knee, and thigh pads to prevent mat burns. Bird's classic WSSU dunk came in the '76-77 season.
He had to sit out a year for academics and Gene Littles took over the program then and brought in a dynamite bunch of new players to go with Sparrow after Warren Reynolds got fired for going 3-23 without him.

Hey Fam, this thread made me sign up! (I have been "reading only" for about a year and a half.) > I saw Bird light up Central in Durham for about 36! He had this little "'dipsty do' not looking at the basket, while going away from the basket Curly Neal shot." Every defender thought that Bird was going to dribble away, and He would throw that joint up amidst traffic in the lane. It would turn it out!!! And Brother had that "duck waddle type swagger walk" that you would laugh at until He started balling. During the Gil -Scott Heron- Moore gym show, He called out Bird and gave him props. And for us... the A&T Swagger, Man (just being a plain old student) we could go into any gym and be Kings! Brothers would go to the game without a way back and didn’t care. lol! I did not realize it but "It was mad confidence" back then. The Sisters in that city would just gravitate to the A&T area. This thread killed me!

...Outlaw, Sinclair Corbett, Ron Johnson, LJ Pipkin, Tookie Turner, ...and later Joe Browner...."T" was rolling. I saw Joe hit like the last 7 or 8 shots against Central in Durham. He took the team on his back! It was beautiful...Central's jaws were on the floor in awe...as it happened, and we pulled the game out. Listen, A&T would guarantee you a crowd for your gym when we came to town...Like the Bulls w/ MJ back in the day. 'T' had fans changing allegiance during the game...It was crazy swagger!

by the way, ron johnson was a straight up beast! i thought he had an outside shot to make the nba. pipkin was a 6'9" strapped eye glasses wearin' string bean forward with long arms, shot blocking ability and the sweetest jump shot you've ever seen a 6'9" forward shoot.
with that line up, we played well against the major d1's. and no hbcu could score in the paint against that team. colbert was at least 6'10", johnson was about 6'8" or 6'9" and could jump out of the gym! omg, it was so much fun traveling to meac schools with that team because we knew no one could beat us...

I saw Bird light up Central in Durham for about 36! pj, I believe I was at that game too. I think Gene Littles was the coach then. Bird broke loose and started throwing up all kinds of crazy stuff....and it was going in! I remember him running down the sideline in front of the Central bench motioning for them to call timeout! Man...those were the days! ;D
