I’m pretty sure the guy with his hand up on the right is Hornsby Howell.

I am constantly in the process of collecting Aggie football and Aggie basketball photos, especially from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. I don’t think that I have this one.

I am constantly in the process of collecting Aggie football and Aggie basketball photos, especially from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. I don’t think that I have this one.

Al Attles is the guy on the right front row. My question is, why would the guy with his hand up be Hornsby Howell, unless he was just hanging out with the team? Howell graduated from A&T in 1950 and was a football coach at that time.

At a point in time Coach Howell was the trainer for the basketball team for years.

That’s what I was saying...that the player on the far right is Al Attles.

Also, Hornsby Howell was on our sports medicine staff as a trainer for a few years before he was on Coach Piggott’s coaching staff, I believe.

Coach Howell also was a trainer in the New York Yankees baseball system. He was the trainer for the Yankees farm baseball team located in Greensboro for years.

Plus, If you look closely you'll see Hornsby has on a long sleeves collar shirt, not a uniform.

You are correct that is Hornsby. Cotton is not in that photograph. That picture sort of brought a moist eye to me. Those were great basketball years. That my friends, is a picture of real Basketball Players and a truly gifted Coach. All of you have absolutely no business selecting the greatest player without a disclaimer or a disqualifier notation or an asterisk advising all that you only can attest to the players you saw during your era as a student and therefore do not know who is A&T's greatest basketball player. You see, without visibly seeing any games before and in some cases after your era as a student, that assertion can not be made. None of you ever mention Joe Cotton, Mr. CIAA Joe Howell (great guard), Hank Marshall, Walter Holtzclaw or Vincent Miller or Charlie Harrison or Herb Gray, all of whom are in that picture. They made the Final Four in 1959 and were robbed in Evansville. The championship was given to Evansville even though A&T was the best team in the tournament.

Joe cotton was an excellent forward. He could score, rebound and defend. He also was a gifted pitcher on the CIAA championship baseball team. He had a lot of "junk" on his ball. During that period, A&T's baseball teams dominated the CIAA. People actually attended games.
