GREENSBORO -- N.C. A&T athletics director Dee Todd said Thursday she has asked the football coaching staff to be available for a major review of the program "early next week," a decision that effectively suspends recruiting efforts while head coach George Small's future is being determined.
"I have told them I will be evaluating the program in the early part of the week and that they are on hold until further notice," Todd said.
Small and his staff will not go on the road Monday, as previously scheduled. The decision came down Wednesday -- just as the coaches were finalizing plans for in-person contact with several key out-of-state recruiting targets.
The Aggies (2-5 MEAC, 3-7) will conclude their second straight losing season Saturday, when they face South Carolina State in Charlotte.
Small, who has compiled a 16-18 record at his alma mater and was the 2003 MEAC Coach of the Year, declined to comment Thursday. He has been conducting program operations as normal this week. That has included recruiting efforts on various fronts that could bring the Aggies transfers of some repute with immediate eligibility in 2006.
But Todd has declined to guarantee she'll bring back Small, an A&T alumnus who is finishing the third year of a five-year contract.
Under that deal, negotiated by then-athletics director Charles Davis, A&T agreed to give Small three years to build a program without the threat of performance-related termination. The university can buy him out for $55,000 -- approximately six months' salary -- thereafter.
If it ends after Saturday's game, Small's tenure would be the shortest for any A&T football coach since Charles W. Carter coached his only season in 1945.
