A UNCG official violated state hiring policies and misused more than $431,000 in state money, according to a report from the state auditor's office released today. The official's name was not immediately available.
The report found that the vice chancellor for Information Technology Services used $431,925 in state funds - including $212,000 in student fees - to bypass university policy and inappropriately hire a contractor referred through an associate.
"$65,000 was used to pay for the contractor's commute from Los Angeles and Las Vegas with excessive reimbursements for meals including two purchases of alcoholic beverages, which is prohibited by State policy," the report states.
The vice chancellor also authorized a pay increase from $150 to $200 an hour after the contractor requested a higher rate.
The report originated as an anonymous tip to the State Auditor's Hotline. Investigators reviewed six contracts with outside contractors and one contract with a university employee.
State purchasing policy requires documentation when competition is not obtained, and university procedure requires UNCG legal counsel to review all outside contracts before they are signed by the appropriate employee: the vice chancellor of business affairs, not ITS. The report found violations of these policies and recommended tightening the university's internal controls.

I expect 13 followup stories on this to run in the News & Record over the next 3 weeks. And there better be at least 5 that make the front page.

They will probably include a sidebar with the next article titled "other local schools who have had recent audit problems" just to mention us.

This Ewing cat needs to talk to Lanita about how to find snitches in the chancellor's office. Lanita would have been all over this story like white on rice. She would have had a name, social security number and blood type already.

The story is not on today's front page or metro front page so I'm guessing the story was released on the web today. I look forward to the Greensboro folks telling us it's front page news in tomorrow's newspaper.

Well you guys were correct. This is the picture they are using with this mornings on-line article about the UNCG scandal. www.news-record.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080530/NRSTAFF/430058609A&T isn't mentioned anywhere within the article. ------------------------------------------------------- I thought they would remove it after somebody complained and now I see it's gone.

I just went to the site and that's not the picture. Still, it wasn't on the front page like they did "T".

This story was on today's front page, but underneath the fold.

Has there been any prominent follow-ups by N&R on this story like they did on A&T's audit problem?
