JCSU Freezes Tuition Increase in Response to Nation’s Economy
April 29, 2008 - Johnson C. Smith University Board of Trustees unanimously approved a measure to hold tuition and room/board costs at its current level in response to the nation’s current economic condition.
“This was the right thing to do especially with today’s economic condition,” said Johnson C. Smith University President Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy. “Many of our students are working three and four jobs and their parent’s jobs have been downsized. These are just a few reasons why we did not increase tuition and room/board fees for the 2008-2009 academic year.”
This is the first time that the Board of Trustees has not raised tuition at JCSU since the 1974-1975 academic year. Tuition at the private historically black university is $15,754 for full-time students taking 12 to 18 hours. Tuition, room and board fees vary, $21,886 to $22,340, according residences hall and meal plan options.
“We (JCSU administration) are going to tighten our belts and live within our means,” Yancy said. “We are going to engage in efficiency when it comes to our operation.”
U.S. News & World Report just recently named JCSU as the 10th best Historically Black College or University in the nation, compared to 70 other schools. Founded in 1867, Johnson C. Smith University offers 27 majors to approximately 1,400 students. Each student is provided with a laptop during the beginning of the school year giving them complete access to a campus-wide network and Internet through both wired and wireless connectivity.
