Staff Writer GREENSBORO -- After protecting its nationally prominent track for two years, N.C. A&T has decided to bring back 3,100 seats worth of temporary bleachers for homecoming Saturday. That means tickets are available for the Aggies' 1:30 p.m. football game with Delaware State.
An exact count of available tickets was unavailable late Monday afternoon. The bleacher seats cost $45 apiece, and their arrival will boost Aggie Stadium's capacity from 21,500 to approximately 24,600. The ticket office, located in Brown Hall on campus, can be reached at 334-7749.
The university stopped importing the bleachers during construction and immediately after completion of the Irwin Belk Track, dedicated July 25, 2004. The surface, where the bleachers will sit, has attracted national youth meets and will be the site of an NCAA regional in May 2006.
"You have a curing time for the asphalt," said Billy Edringston, A&T's associate athletics director for facilities. "And after two years it has been cured long enough. We have talked with the professionals to make sure it's safe to do it with the appropriate precautions."
Athletics director Dee Todd, a former track and cross country coach at Northwestern and Georgia Tech, said university engineers will supervise the installation process.
"It was a fear of the unknown," she said, referring to the caution. "We have a protective covering" for the track.
