Wide receiver has spent last three weeks on Green Bay's practice squad
The Green Bay Packers Wednesday promoted wide receiver Jamal Jones to the active roster and replaced him on the practice squad with guard Joe Hayes.
The Packers will be without wide receiver Terrence Murphy for an extended period of time, possibly the rest of the season. Murphy was en route to Green Bay today after spending the last two nights in a Charlotte, N.C., hospital as a result of a neck injury that he sustained during the game on Monday night...
...Jones, a 6-foot, 214-pound player out of North Carolina A&T, originally joined the Packers last December and spent the season’s final month on the practice squad. Re-signed and allocated to NFL Europe, he caught 31 passes for 388 yards (12.5 avg.) for the Frankfurt Galaxy this summer. In preseason with the Packers, he totaled three catches for 30 yards before the club waived him in its final roster reduction. He had spent the last three weeks on the practice squad.
Jones is expected to return kickoffs and serve as Green Bay's No. 4 receiver this Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Donald Driver, Robert Ferguson and Antonio Chatman are the Packers' top three receivers.
A non-drafted free agent, Jones entered the league with the Rams after the 2004 draft and spent that training camp in St. Louis. He will wear No. 19 with the Packers. Hayes, a 6-foot-4, 304-pound lineman from San Jose State, spent the last two training camps in Green Bay. He gained NFL Europe experience with Hamburg during the ’05 season.
