Nakia DeBlanc
School: Woodland Hills
Year: Senior
Sport: Basketball
Notable: Nakia DeBlanc scored 19 points in Woodland Hills' 63-22 victory over Section 2-AAAA foe Gateway on Jan. 22. In the process, DeBlanc eclipsed the 1,000-point total in her career, finishing the game at 1,004.
DeBlanc, according to coach Korie Morton-Rozier, is a huge reason why the Wolverines are tied with Fox Chapel for the section lead.
"She's having a great impact this year," Morton-Rozier said. "She's becoming a dominant center who's learning to play the post, and she's improved her outside (shooting) game as well."
DeBlanc was relieved to get the 1,000-point accomplishment so she can focus on a promise she made to Morton-Rozier before the season - winning a section championship.
"It took a lot of hard work (to reach 1,000 points), so I was glad I finally got it," DeBlanc said. "Now I want to try and get a new (section championship) banner in our gym. Our last championship came in 1997, when my coach played."
DeBlanc committed to play basketball at North Carolina A&T next year because she liked the family atmosphere the campus provided. Both Morton-Rozier and DeBlanc expect to see immediate results.
"I wanted to go somewhere where I wouldn't sit for two years and not get any playing time," DeBlanc said. "The coaches at North Carolina A&T basically said that they give everyone the same opportunity as long as they produce during practice and during the workouts."
