GREENSBORO, N.C.- Senior Marlena Murphy had her usual steady performance with 14 points and 17 rebounds, but Campbell’s women’s basketball team (5-6) still fell to North Carolina A&T (7-3) 66-41 on Wednesday, Dec. 19 in Greensboro, N.C. This was the final game for the Camels before Christmas. The all-time series between the two teams now stands at 20-9 in the Camels’ favor.
Sophomore Lindsay Smithberger tallied seven points to lead the CU bench. Redshirt sophomore Gara Bell also had a solid game with six points, three rebounds and a pair of steals.
A&T had three players reach double figures led by Amber Bland’s 26 on 10-for-13 shooting. Jaleesa Sams chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds and Lamona Smalley had a 10 point effort.
The CU offense only shot 16-for-52 (31 percent) from the field and were 2-for-20 from beyond the arc. North Carolina A&T hit nearly 53 percent of their shots (28-for-53) in the game.
The Camels closed to within five midway through the second half on a made jumper from Murphy (40-35) but then went a nearly seven minute stretch with only two made field goals as North Carolina A&T tightened the screws defensively on their way to 66-41 victory.
CU trailed at the break 34-23. Murphy led the Camels with eight points and nine rebounds at the break. The Lady Aggies, who never trailed in the game, were led by Bland’s 10 points. Smalley had a strong performance as well with eight points. The Camels won the battle of the board, but also turned the ball over 21 times before the intermission. CU also was only 29 percent (7-for-24)) from the field compared to 55 percent (16-for-29) for A&T.
The Lady Camels now take a nine-day break for Christmas. CU will be back on the court on Dec. 28 at the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta against Alcorn State at 4 p.m.
