GREENSBORO, November 5, 2007 – A year ago, first-team All-MEAC North Carolina A&T women’s basketball guard Amber Bland played 35 or minutes on 25 different occasions. Teammate Ta’Wuana Cook, the 2006-2007 MEAC Rookie of the Year, played 35 or minutes 19 times.
Based on Monday night’s event, those two standouts will not have to play that much for the Aggies to be successful in 2007-2008. N.C. A&T got 26 points from its bench to defeat Division II Lenoir-Rhyne 79-56 in an exhibition game played at Corbett Sports Center Monday night.
Senior guard led the charge for the Aggie reserves with 13 points on 2-for-3 shooting from the 3-point arc. Brittanie Taylor-James led the Aggies with 15 points and six rebounds. Bland finished with 14 points and three 3-pointers, while Cook scored 11 points and committed just one turnover.
“Can you believe a young lady doesn’t have to play 30 or 35 minutes for us to win?” said N.C. A&T head women’s basketball coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs. “If you can bring people off the bench and not lose a lot and maybe nothing at all sometimes, it’s huge. When you know you can take a young lady out for a breather and still be competitive, it allows you to do so many things. If we can just stay healthy, we’ll be just fine.”
Lonise Coulter, who started 26 games last season, scored eight points off the bench, while Wudi Alford added four assists and Brittane Neely added two blocks from off the Aggies bench. In her first game, highly touted freshman Jaleesa Sams had seven points, four rebounds and three assists, but was plagued by foul trouble.
“Of course I love Amber Bland,’’ said Bibbs. “She is just a great player. But I thought Brittane Neely played well for us. She got in there and rebounded. She blocked a few shots, which is going to be big for us. I thought Jaleesa Sams played pretty well tonight. With the type of aggressiveness she plays with she is going to get in some foul trouble. But we don’t want her to tone it down. We just want her to be more discipline.”
Jami Safrit led the Bears with 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. She had five offensive rebounds on the night, but the Bears were out-rebounded 42-27.
The Aggies took control of the game midway through the first half. With the Aggies leading 17-15, sophomore center Lamona Smalley intercepted a Jacquelyn Kremer pass and swung the ball to junior forward Ahmad Williams. Williams found Bland open in the corner for a 3-pointer that gave the Aggies a 20-15 lead.
Bland’s three sparked a 10-2 Aggies run that ended with a Bland three. After a Bears free throw cut the Aggies lead to 27-18, a free throw by Smalley and another Bland 3-pointer gave the Aggies their biggest lead of the half at 31-18. Cook ended the half with a 3-point play to give the Aggies a 36-20 halftime lead.
The Bears cut the Aggies lead to 12 with 17:31 remaining in the second half, but an 8-2 Aggies spurt highlighted by a Talyor-James 3-point play put the game away for good for N.C. A&T. The Aggies begin their season 6 p.m., Friday at Stetson.
“We are working really hard to get our defense down,’’ said Bibbs, who will be going win No. 398 on Friday. “We have people who can score, but a lot of times when you have people who can score they don’t play defense. But I saw some good things tonight. But then there were some things we’re really going to have to do better. The bottom line is if you play defense and you out-rebound your opponents you’re going to win a championship.”

Shooting 42.9% from th 3 point-line for the game and over 52 percent from the field in the second half? I agree with you.
