NORFOLK - For a few minutes Saturday, it appeared the Norfolk State women's basketball team might upset North Carolina A&T at Echols Hall. Up by seven points with 13 minutes to play, the Spartans instead suffered their fifth consecutive loss, 83-77.
NSU's Areya Walker had a career-high 26 points and 10 rebounds and the Aggies made just 35 percent of their field goals. But Norfolk State committed 28 turnovers, leading to 28 North Carolina A&T points. The Aggies, holding second place in the 11-team Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, also went to the free-throw line 51 times, making 33 of their attempts.
Walker "is carrying us offensively," said NSU coach James Sweat, whose team plays host to South Carolina State on Monday. "She's a strong player in the paint and if she works harder, she can get 30 points and 15 rebounds a night."
Norfolk State (4-22, 3-13) found itself in foul trouble, made worse by the fact that Sweat didn't have a full team. Starting guard Tiffany Jenkins was at a funeral and center Tiffany McNair was sidelined by nasal bleeding that necessitated two emergency-room visits Saturday.
In addition, starting forward Ashley Green played only four first-half minutes before Sweat sent her to change into street clothes. The coach declined comment on the move.
Norfolk State's Toia Johnson had 13 points, and Tiffany Gadsen and Ashley Compton each had 10 points. Ta'Wuana Cook led North Carolina A&T (16-11, 11-5) with 23 points and had eight rebounds.
