A&T drives to victory over Morgan
An analysis by Rob Daniels
GREENSBORO — They’re going on the road for the rest of the regular season, so the N.C. A&T Aggies practiced driving in the basketball sense Monday night.
The Aggies prevailed over Morgan State 91-79 in overtime in their final Corbett Sports Center appearance, and they did it to a shocking degree on the foul line. They attempted 51 free throws — and only 47 field goals — and generated many of their points with dribble penetration.
In one second-half stretch, the Aggies were fouled while shooting on seven of eight possessions. They went nearly five minutes without an official field-goal attempt.
"We were aggressive, and we really needed to attack," said Walter Booth, one of three seniors honored before the game. "Everybody gave everything they had."
Thanks to odd scheduling, the Aggies (8-7 MEAC, 12-15) play 10 of their 18 MEAC games on the road, and they probably need to win two of their last three to get a first-round bye in the conference tournament. They gave themselves a chance Monday by surviving the frantic end of regulation and scoring on their first six possessions in OT. Steven Rush’s two off-balance, heavily contested 3-pointers in the extra period gave him 26 points for the night and proved to be the difference.
Three Bears fouled out, and Morgan got to the line 19 times — 32 fewer than A&T. But coach Todd Bozeman blamed his team’s 7-for-19 performance at the line rather than the opinions of the officials.
"If we make free throws, we win the game," he said. "Even with their 51."
The Aggies, who made 35 of their 51 free throws, fell six attempts short of the school record, set in 1988.
Neither team led by more than six in regulation, and the Aggies made their offense work without attempting field goals. Their chief play was "V," so named for the formation it takes. The point guard orders shooters to the corners, and he keeps the ball and tries to draw a foul if opponents don’t pinch toward the middle.
"If their big men don’t show," coach Jerry Eaves said, "then you just turn the corner."
Backup Glenn Nelson created opportunities on four straight possessions, and it became clear the impact would be cumulative. The Aggies were in the double bonus with 10 minutes left in regulation.
The Bears still had a chance to win in regulation. They took three shots in the final 10 seconds, but came up empty.
"Once that buzzer rang and it was going to overtime, I knew it was our game," said forward Jason Wills, who pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds.
Rush’s second long-range shot in overtime, which he hit while falling out of bounds in the left corner, gave the Aggies their biggest lead of the night to that point.
"I’m never going to limit his shots," Eaves said. "He has to play unconscious. I’m going to let him shoot."
The Aggies play at Norfolk State, Hampton and regular-season champion Delaware State the rest of the way. The unbalanced schedule might be to their detriment in the final standings, but as things have turned out, it does present opportunity.
At this point, Morgan, Norfolk State, Hampton, A&T and South Carolina State are in a contest for three first-round byes. (Delaware State and Florida A&M hold the top two positions.) Norfolk State and Hampton are 8-6, and they face each other Wednesday. If A&T pulls off a Tidewater sweep, it will be certain of a higher seed than at least one of the two.
The season already has been the best in five years for the Aggies, whose seniors came in with Eaves and have remained through frequently trying times. Now they have an eye toward finishing in the top half of the MEAC. That seems inconsequential when compared to A&T’s seven straight league titles in the 1980s, but it does represent progress.
"On Senior Night," said Wills, a junior, "you’ve got to make it happen."

They got two good lucks at the basket. Fortunately, both shots rimmed out.

Free throws probably would have won the game in regulation time. Nelson, Ewing and Rush were deadly from the line. Keep the ball in their hands down the stretch. Although Nelson didn't play in the OT. It appears that Bozeman had as much interest in that game as a flock of KKK at an NAACP conference. I wonder if he is looking to move on?

He did not even bother to argue very close calls or fouls. He seemed disengaged from the game.

I think he was afraid of showing any emotion at all because he knew the Dawg Pound would feed on it.

The crowd must have really unnerved them, I would have paid money to go...

I don't believe the man was affected by Corbett. He has coached at the highest level and in arenas much larger than ours and should have heard and seen about anything that fans can say or do. I don't think Bozeman is serious about MSU. Hopefully, and I think probably so, our fans got to his players (which is even better). MSU players had to finish the game at the end of the court with those "nice well behaved scholars".

Morgan missed those free throws down the stretch during crunch time.
