You know me: I'm always gonna love football first, but I must admit - the Dawg Pound is realy starting to grow on me.

We love football but A&T is a basketball school with a football facade. We want to be a football school but let's face it, NC is a basketball state undeniably. From the late seventies to the mid-nineties, nearly 20 years of great basketball. And even before, according to the older heads.

We were a basketball school when I was an undergrad in the late 80's - early 90's but that is what I call the "transition period". Claude Willams, Chuckie Becton and crew…..when those guys left, the basketball program began its decline. The arrival of Bill Hayes completed the transformation of A&T from a basketball to football school.
Nowadays, I think the alums still care more about football more than basketball. The way we post on this board is confirmation enough. However, if the football program continues in its current state, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the undergrads latch onto basketball and thus begin another shift.

Some of you must live out of state. A&T is both, just look at the overall history. NC is just as much a football state as it is basketball. Just look at the players in the NFL.

I voted Basketball. It was based on each program's accomplishments/history. While football has it share of accolades, it pales in comparsion to basketball.

North Carolina is NOT a football state, period. Never has been never will be. Texas, Florida and Ohio are football states. North Carolinians just like the pagentry that goes along with football. N.C. State is just like we are, in denial. They drew nearly 57,000 fans per game last year, fired their coach all in the quest to seem like the football school they want to be while secretly wanting to compete with Duke and Carolina in basketball every year. At A&T, we just like A&T. Anywhere the Blue and Gold can be displayed we're there. It's the Greatest Homecoming on Earth no matter what the team is doing and when the team is winning (even just a little), it's even better than that but... We secretly want to pack 18,000 into the Greensboro Coliseum for an NCCU basketball game and again for a Winston game then have have two concerts(Hip Hop and Old School) right after each game. After that go undefeated, win an NCAA regional right there in G'boro. Shock the NCAA by going to the Final Four and be in basketball heaven forevermore. Every bluechip recruit would then have Duke, Carolina and A&T on their list of schools to consider. Dee Todd pulls a long time favor and A&T joins the ACC in 2012. Bill Gates is touched by our cinderella story and seeds the largest athletic endowment in NCAA history. Michael Jordan's ex-wife adopts A&T to spite Michael and HBCU athletics is never the same again. The end. ... I'm sorry I nodded off and got carried away.

For those that voted both, name another school that is BOTH and why. For even Florida and Ohio State, basketball is "johnny come lately". I think we can be neither but be can't be both. If you played word association: For each school below QUICKLY say, Football or Basketball. If you hesitate, it's more likely to be neither than both: - Ohio State - Duke - USC (Southern Cal) - A&T - Michigan - North Carolina - Grambling - Georgetown - Howard - Wake Forest - FAMU - Miami - Kansas - South Carolina State

There was a time when Michigan was. Yes. Was. During the Fab Five but that was about the Fab Five more than it was about University of Michigan. For example: Grambling will always be Football school and Band school. No matter how bad the band or the football team is or how good the basketball team is, the school will continue to be identified with those two entities and potential students know it. It's just like certain schools are known as "party" schools. It doesn't matter what year, what decade, or what century. And some schools are not. Note: I really would like it if we were a football school someday.

Though football has generally been competitive, basketball has been dominant, something football aspires to be.
