Fayetteville State University Chancellor T.J. Bryan has been asked to resign, sources have told The Fayetteville Observer.
UNC President Erskine Bowles made the request of Bryan during a meeting Friday morning at his office in Chapel Hill, the sources said.
FSU has been in the news recently for a controversy with its nursing program and a state audit of its finances.
Reached by phone late Sunday, Bryan denied being asked to resign but did say, “I think an announcement will be forthcoming.”
That announcement may come as soon as today, according to the sources. Bryan said she plans to release a statement about the matter.
Dr. Lloyd D. Hackley, a former chancellor of FSU and N.C. A&T, is being discussed as a possible interim chancellor, the sources said.
Bowles met with Bryan and Ben Brown, chairman of the FSU board of trustees, on Tuesday. His visit was to discuss the audit, but Bowles also brought up the possibility of a change in leadership at the school, the sources said.
Bryan then met again with Bowles, this time in Chapel Hill, on Friday.
Brown informed FSU board members of the developments Saturday, sources said. Brown denied knowing about any decision on a change in leadership at FSU on Sunday, referring all questions to Bowles.
Bowles could not be reached for comment.
FSU finances are being reviewed by state auditors.
In May, 24 of 31 nursing students did not graduate after they failed an exit exam that was not part of their original graduation requirements.
Fayetteville State is one of 17 schools in the UNC system. As president, Bowles is charged with the responsibility for nominating chancellors for each of the UNC system’s campuses for appointment by the Board of Governors.
