A&T State University won a $500,000 contract on Wednesday with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help create buildings that are both environmentally safe and can protect people from terrorist attacks. Jonathan Herrmann, deputy director of the EPA's new National Homeland Security Center, said his agency chose A&T over other engineering schools for the three-year project because the Greensboro university has been successful in other federal research efforts dealing with buildings and energy use. A&T researchers and faculty will work with building designers and contractors, as well as insurance companies, to determine the best ways to provide protection for buildings from terrorist attacks. Harmohinder Singh, director of A&T's Center for Energy Research & Technology, pointed out his university has been working on hydrogen-powered fuel cells to power homes. This contract stemmed from other work A&T has done with the U.S. Department of Agriculture on water quality, as well as with the U.S. Army on creating stronger buildings, said N. Radhakrishnan, the university's vice chancellor for research and economic development.
