GREENSBORO -- Five N.C. A&T students were charged Tuesday with an armed robbery at UNCG.
Each faces two counts of second-degree kidnapping, two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon and one count of resisting a public officer.
The incident occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at Foust Park off Spring Street.
Two UNCG students -- 18-year-old Michael Langan and 19-year-old Ashley Perryman -- were sitting on a park bench when the robbery happened, said Maj. Jamie Herring of the UNCG police.
Langan and Perryman were threatened with a razor blade while the five robbers rifled through their belongings. The robbers took Perryman's purse, and Langan's wallet and cell phone.
The students weren't hurt during the robbery.
They reported the robbery at the nearby campus police station, and an alert was issued. A plainclothes UNCG officer, D.L. Burnette, was patrolling the area of campus where the robbery occurred.
The five students arrested were: Keith Moyd Winfield, 18, of 410 N. Benbow Road in Greensboro; Steven Douglas Eubanks Jr., 18, of 1302 W. Hudson Ave. in Durham; Walter Eugene McClain, 18, of 1710 Archdale St. in Charlotte; Michael Julian McKinley, 18, of 608 Bailey Drive in Raleigh; and George Kelvin McNeill, 18, of 1891 Parker Lane in Rockingham.
Burnette spotted the five men running and was able to catch one of them, Herring said.
Two other suspects were apprehended behind Tate Street Billiards a short time later.
When UNCG police learned the men they were holding were A&T students, they contacted the school's campus police to see what help they could provide in locating the remaining two suspects.
By late Tuesday morning, Herring said, the last suspects were in custody including one who turned himself in.
Winfield, Eubanks, McKinley and McNeill were being held at the Guilford County Jail under $10,000 bond.
Bond was set at $10,500 for McClain, who was also being held on a charge of failure to appear on unrelated misdemeanor charges.
A&T police are investigating whether the five students might be involved with any on-campus crimes, Detective D.M. Grusky said.
But there is no concrete evidence currently linking the A&T students to any crimes, he said.
UNCG hasn't had any armed robberies on campus recently, police Capt. Paul Lester said. Tuesday's incident was likely a random crime of opportunity, he said.
"It turned out real well with getting everyone behind bars so quickly," Lester said. "It might discourage people from committing other robberies."
