VIRGINIA BEACH - Police say they broke up a mid-level drug ring operating out of the Magic Hollow neighborhood in Virginia Beach.
Seven people, including Norfolk State University wide receiver Naron M. Sanderlin, were arrested last weekend, police said.
On Friday, police displayed some of what was seized in the bust, including 326 grams of powder cocaine, four pounds of marijuana, four handguns, about $7,600, boxes of bullets designed to penetrate body armor, scales and a money counter. A 2005 Nissan Altima also was confiscated.
Two children, ages 2 and 6, were in the house on the 2900 block of Trewey Court when the police made most of the arrests and seized the drugs, said Captain Dennis Santos. The children have been released to relatives, he said.
Santos said the investigation began in July when police received a tip about a drug dealer in the house.
According to the search warrant affidavit, an officer who investigated went through some trash outside and discovered small plastic bags containing a residue that tested positive for drugs.
Police said they then set up a sting and bought cocaine from Naquan L. Johnson, 19. He was arrested on Dec. 1.
The next day, police went to the house and arrested Naron Sanderlin, 20; Jovan L. Sanderlin, 26; Antonio R. Clark, 23; James M. Guy, 22; Earl C. Woodhouse III, 24; and Lakendra N. Mitchell, 22.
Naron Sanderlin, a Chesapeake native, is a sophomore wide receiver on NSU's football team. Coach Pete Adrian said Friday afternoon he did not know about the arrest. NSU Athletic Director Marty Miller said the university learned of the situation Friday and that officials hadn't had a chance to address it.
Johnson and Jovan Sanderlin remain in custody. The others have been released.
The children were Mitchell's, police said.
Authorities are looking to try the case in federal court.
Santos said he is having the weapons tested to see if they were used in other crimes. One gun was stolen and found on Naron Sanderlin, Santos said.
The street value of the drugs was about $30,000, Santos said.
The investigation is continuing, and there is a possibility of additional arrests, he said.
