Ammons recommends new athletic director
By Angeline J. Taylor Tallahassee Democrat Staff Writer
Florida A&M University President James Ammons recommended a new athletic director just weeks short of the exit of former director Nelson Townsend.
Ammons asked the academic arm of the board of trustees to waive advertising for the post. Today, he recommended for the committee to accept William "Bill" Hayes as a candidate for the top athletic post.
Hayes is a former athletic director of North Carolina Central University which is where Ammons served as president.
A decision on a multi-year, $175,000 contract for Hayes will not be made until the full board of trustees votes on the matter later this morning.
Trustees will also be voting on waiving advertisement for the head football coaching job recently vacated by Rubin Carter. Ammons told the academic committee which is made up of trustees that he would be recommending a head coach by Dec. 17.

Think Hayes will take the job if offered? That's a lot of loot! Might be hard to turn down for big Bill!

According to several sources, Ammons is interested in Grambling State head football coach Rod Broadway as FAMU's next head football coach.
Broadway was previously the head football coach at North Carolina Central when Ammons served as the university's president.
Broadway had three consecutive seasons of eight or more wins at North Carolina Central before leaving for Grambling State.
Broadway went 8-3 this season, his first with the Tigers.

My thinking was that Coach Hayes would never leave NC. Hell, he still might not. Tallahassee ain’t exactly on the beach. I’d heard from a reliable source that Hayes didn’t like the way Broadway left Central and I don’t know how friendly they are. But stranger bedfellows have been made. If I was Hayes I’d hire Fobbs.

That would be funny. Hire Fobbs a day before he leaves for FAMU!
