Duke fires football coach Ted Roof

Duke University fired head football coach Ted Roof today after a 1-11 season that ended with an overtime loss to archrival UNC.
"Whenever you make a change, it's difficult," Duke athletics director Joe Alleva said as he announced the move this afternoon.
"It's really difficult when you have a man like Ted Roof, who exemplifies all the values and integrity that you want in a head coach."
Alleva said Duke would look for someone with head coaching experience as Roof's successor. He said he wanted "a proven leader" who "can take Duke football where we want to go, and that is in the direction of winning championships and representing Duke University with excellence."
Alleva said he would lead the search committee in the quest for a new coach, and hoped to have his man by Christmas.
Speculation had been swirling for days about whether Roof would keep his job as head coach after four full seasons at the helm. Roof is 6-45 in that span.
The Blue Devils loss to UNC kept Duke winless in the ACC for three straight seasons.
Roof was the Blue Devils' sixth football coach in the past 24 years. His winning percentage (.118) ranks as the lowest in the program's 87-year history.
Alleva several times praised Roof's character. "It just comes down to the point where you have to win some games," Alleva said.
"I support Joe Alleva's decision, which I know was not an easy one," said Duke President Dr. Richard H. Brodhead. "Ted Roof has earned the highest respect from everyone he's worked with, and we're grateful for what he has accomplished. But though our team has showed progress, we have yet to reach the success we're looking for. Duke is committed to developing excellence in football, and I am confident that with new leadership, we will achieve this goal."
