MURFREESBORO - The Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald has learned that Chowan University is close to placing its football team in a conference.
A reliable source inside the Hawk athletic program confirmed Thursday that Chowan Athletic Director Dennis Helsel met this week with conference officials to put finishing details on becoming football-only members of a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II league.
According to the Daily Advance in Elizabeth City, that league is likely the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). In a recent edition, the Advance indicated that league was looking at adding three schools for football membership, one of which is Chowan University.
The CIAA is a conference made up of historically back colleges including Elizabeth City State University, St. Paul’s College, Virginia State University and Virginia Union University.
CIAA Director of Public Relations Shera White confirmed the league’s interest in three schools which are believed to be Chowan, UNC-Pembroke and Kentucky State.
She told the Advance, “There are three schools that we’re in talks with. Those three schools in relation to football, not necessarily all the sports.”
Reached by telephone Friday morning, Helsel said he would not speculate on conference membership.
“We certainly are looking to put all of our teams, including football in a conference,” Helsel said. “We would look at any situation that made sense for the university and our student-athletes.”
Helsel said he felt any announcement about possible affiliation should come from the league.
“We’re not going to address speculation about conference affiliation,” he said. “It is our opinion that any announcements concerning conference affiliation should come from the conference.”
Chowan University officially completed the transition from Division III to Division II today, becoming a full-fledged member of NCAA D-II on September 1. The three-year process came about after CU President Dr. M. Chris White and the board of trustees made the decision to take the school to D-II.
The Chowan athletic program has undergone historic change in past four years. The school has changed athletic administrations, classification and retired the nickname “Braves” at the urging of the NCAA.
