GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Faced with the possibility of losing close to 20 starting players from its national champion team, the Florida Gators started to rebuild Thursday and enrolled nine recruits for the spring semester.
Two quarterbacks, a running back, a receiver, a tight end and four teammates from Class 5A state champion Lakeland High School will start class Monday.
"I can't think of anybody in the country that has nine -- nine guys that showed up for class on Monday," coach Urban Meyer said. "We have nine guys going to class. That's a tremendous boost. We have been very successful. ... And it gives them a little bit of a juice, a little head start going into their freshman year."
The nine will be eligible to participate in spring practice and summer drills. The Gators had four early enrollees this past year, including quarterback Tim Tebow.
The group includes:
-- Ahmad Black, a 5-foot-10-inch, 170-pound cornerback from Lakeland
-- Joe Haden, a 5-foot-11-inch, 195-pound receiver from Fort Washington (Md.) Friendly
-- Aaron Hernandez, a 6-foot-4-inch, 235-pound tight end from Bristol (Conn.) Central
-- Cameron Newton, a 6-foot-5-inch, 225-pound quarterback from Atlanta (Ga.) Westlake
-- Maurkice Pouncey, a 6-foot-4-inch, 283-pound offensive lineman from Lakeland
-- Michael Pouncey, a 6-foot-4-inch, 298-pound offensive lineman from Lakeland
-- Bryan Waggener, a 6-foot-4-inch, 226-pound quarterback from Glendora (Calif.) Citrus College
-- Bo Williams, a 6-foot, 225-pound running back from Oakland Park Northeast
-- Paul Wilson, a 6-foot-1-inch, 175-pound receiver from Lakeland
