GREENSBORO, N.C., December 26, 2006 – In their first season with the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team, sophomore guard Amber Bland and freshman point guard Tweet Cook are putting together winning recipe that could benefit the Aggies this season and seasons to come.
The combination helped the Aggies defeat Navy and Elon last week at home, earning Bland and Cook the MEAC Player of the Week and MEAC Rookie of the Week honor respectively.
In two games last week, Bland (5-11, Boardman, Ohio), averaged 20.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game while shooting 53.3 percent from the field. In a 64-59 win over Navy on Dec. 18, Bland scored 13 first-half points and then hit three out of four free throws to help the Aggies seal the win. Amber Bland
Two days later, Bland hit six of her first seven shots to help Aggies to ignite the Aggies to an 81-46 rout of Elon. The big win helped Bland end a streak of 110 straight minutes played. Bland, the Aggies leading scorer, is second in the MEAC in scoring (18.2 ppg).
The win over Elon was the Aggies (6-4) fifth straight and it helped the Aggies complete a 3-0 homestand from Dec. 16-20. On Dec. 16, Bland hit the game-winning shot against UNC-Asheville with 6.4 seconds remaining. Bland is a transfer out of Penn State who was a top 5 prep star coming out of Boardman High.
Cook (5-8, Fayetteville, N.C.), who won MEAC Rookie of the Week honors two weeks ago, averaged 16.5 points, 4.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals on 45.4 percent shooting last week. The 62.3 percent free throw shooter was also 11-for-14 (.786) from the line last week.
Previously, Cook won the weekly honor by scoring 18 points, dishing out seven assists and grabbing seven rebounds in a conference win over S.C. State. Cook led Seventy-First High School to two state titles before coming to N.C. A&T. This season, she is averaging 14.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game. The Aggies put their five-game win streak on the line against Baylor on Dec. 28 in Waco, Texas at 5 p.m., eastern time. Two days later they travel to Fort Worth, Texas to face Texas Christian University at 3 p.m., eastern.
