LYNCHBURG, Va., December 3, 2006 – The North Carolina A&T indoor track teams began their season on Saturday with a win in the 4x400 women’s relay and 16 top 5 finishes at the Liberty Kickoff Invitational at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center.
The team of Christina Gray, Jennifer Jackson, Carmenta Mitchell and Caryle Decruise took the women’s 4x400 with a time of 3:57.67. The Aggies ‘B’ team – Loreal Smith, Alexandria Spruiel, Sha Tara Taylor and Takisha Wise – took third in the event with a time of 4:01.50. Smith, a sophomore from Tallahassee, Fla., also had an impressive showing in the 60 meter dash, finishing tied for second with Virginia Tech’s Shell Green. Three other Aggies finished in the top 10 of the event.
Jackson, a junior out of Philadelphia, Pa., and Kimona Smith also had second place finishes. Jackson ran a 59.21 in the 400 meters, while Kimona Smith leaped 38-feet, 9 ½ inches in the triple jump. Junior jumper Shayla Jemmott finished two spots behind her with a jump 37-feet, 7 ¼ inches. Kimona Smith wasn’t finished with her impressive leaps; she jumped 18-feet, 5-inches to finish fourth in the long jump.
On the men’s side, the Aggies had eight top 5 finishes, including Thomas Funderburk and Kevin Lowe’s showing in the 200 meter dash. Funderburk ran a 22.99 to finish second behind N.C. State’s A’Tolani Akinkuoto. Lowe finished seven-tenths of a second behind his teammate to finish third.
The Aggies also had success in some of the longer distance races. In the 800 meters, Jesse Fox finished third, while Rashad Burnett and Reggie McAfee finished fifth and sixth respectively in the mile. Kavaughn Brown’s 16:34.41 was good enough for sixth place in the 5000 meters.
In the field events, David McFadgen placed second and the highest placement of an athlete attached to a university with a leap of 47-feet, 4 ½ inches in the triple jump. Sophomore Lonnie Phifer placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 49-feet, 10-inches.
