For the 2024 NIT, conference regular-season champions that do not win their conference tournament or are not otherwise selected to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship will not receive an automatic bid to the NIT. Instead, the NIT will guarantee two teams (based on the NET rankings) from each of six conferences (Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern). Thirty-two spots in the Postseason WNIT were filled automatically by the best item available in each of the nation's 32 conferences. If a conference's automatic qualifier team declined the WNIT invitation, the conference forfeited that automatic spot, and that selection went into the pool of at-large schools. The remaining 32 team slots in the Postseason WNIT were filled by the top teams available. Any team from a Division I conference, or a Division I independent team, may be considered. Any team considered for an at-large berth must have an overall record of .500 or better. The format won't affect the WNIT's automatic bid to any regular season conference champion not making the 68-team field, since 2022.
So, they basically are operating under the old men's NIT format - taking the regular season champs who lost in their conference tourney and didn't make the NCAA field of 68 and filling the rest of the brackets with the nation's best available teams that also didn't make the NCAA tournament.

There's no way we would have earned an at-large bid this year, if not for our conference affiliation. Being in the CAA boosted our strength of schedule and RPI.  |

Looks like the NCAA's 32-team Inaugural Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT) also made the way for this to happen for some teams...possibly including us.
At any rate, I'll take it!

A&T to Host WNIT Greensboro Showdown Against UNC Greensboro
The Aggies women's basketball program is hosting an NCAA-sanctioned postseason event for the first time.GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T women's basketball season is not over. In fact, it just became historic. For the first time in program history, women's basketball will host an NCAA-sanctioned postseason tournament game when they invite Gate City neighbor UNC Greensboro to Corbett Sports Center for an opening-round Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) contest on Friday at 7 p.m. "I spoke to our players in practice today about what being able to host a national tournament game means," said A&T head coach Tarrell Robinson. "It means the university, athletics department, and community are committed to women's basketball here at North Carolina A&T State University. We are an investment, and this investment gives us a chance to play in front of our families, friends, and alumni in a national tournament. It also gives us a shot at being very successful in a national tournament." A&T has not hosted an NCAA-sanctioned postseason event since hosting the 2020 NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships at Marcus T. Johnson Track. The Aggies also hosted the NCAA Division I Track & Field East Preliminary Round (regionals) in 2006, 2009, and 2010. The Aggies women's basketball team enters Friday's game with a 20-11 record. They were eliminated from the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Basketball Championship Tournament semifinal game by regular-season champion Stony Brook. A&T's 20 wins mark the 12th time the Aggies have reached the milestone in program history. It is the sixth time the Aggies have done it in Robinson's 12-year head coaching era. The Aggies had impressive non-conference wins over Power Five Wake Forest, strong mid-major Liberty University, and fellow WNIT participant Stetson at Stetson. The Aggies went 13-5 in conference play, finishing in a tie for third place with another 2024 WNIT participant, the College of Charleston. For most of the season, the Aggies were in a first-place tie with Stony Brook in the CAA standings. They even spent a week in the CollegeInsider.com mid-major Top 25 poll. The Aggies entered the CAA tournament in Washington, D.C., as the No. 4 seed, earning a coveted double-bye. They defeated 13th-seeded Hofstra in the quarterfinals for their first postseason win since leaving the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in 2021. Friday will mark A&T's sixth appearance in the postseason WNIT. In 2010, the Aggies became the first HBCU to win two consecutive postseason WNIT games when they defeated Wake Forest and the Charlotte 49ers on the road before losing to the Miami Hurricanes. The Aggies will be making their fourth WNIT appearance under Robinson and their first since losing at James Madison in 2019. A&T's last postseason appearance came in 2021 when they lost in San Marcos, Texas, to No. 1 seed N.C.
