Coastal Carolina 24 SCSU 23
Bulldogs fall by single point
By THOMAS GRANT JR., T&D Senior Sports Writer
Up 13 points entering the fourth quarter, the odds of unbeaten and 20th-ranked South Carolina State squandering a double-digit lead against upstart Coastal Carolina in front of a near-capacity crowd at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium looked slim Saturday.
Under head coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough, the Bulldogs had won 23 out of 24 games in which they were tied or ahead at half-time. They also owned a 10-0
record in televised games and with Harvard having already lost to Lehigh, were in possession of Division I-AA's longest winning streak at seven games.
In a span of nine minutes, the Bulldogs saw their dreams of an undefeated season and their winning streak sent crashing to the ground as Coastal Carolina scored 14 unanswered points to send many of the 18,902 fans in attendance home disappointed with a 24-23 victory.

Hampton rolls to 5-0 with win
The Pirates hand Delaware State a loss using a strong defense.

HAMPTON -- As revenge victories go, Hampton University's 26-8 payback of Delaware State was methodical, more like Muhammad Ali's blue-collar wins over Joe Frazier than Joe Louis' quick knockout of Max Schmeling. But then the Pirates' style is a lot like Ali's in his twilight: great defensively, with just enough offensive punch to carry the day.
