South Carolina State thumps WSSU 52-12
By Thomas Grant Jr.
SPECIAL TO THE JOURNAL
ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Full-fledged membership in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is still a few years away for Winston-Salem State.
Yesterday the Rams paid their dues against the conference's defending co-champion and the team with which Coach Kermit Blount received his tutelege under the legenday Willie Jeffries. It would prove to be another painful lesson for Winston-Salem State as turn-overs and the high-powered offense of South Carolina State added up to a 52-12 pounding at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

Bowie State 35 Morgan State 21
Redman's 99-yard score highlights record night

Morgan State narrowly escaped with a six-point win when it met Bowie State last year. The Division II school was upset that it came so close and longed for another shot at the Division I-AA Bears.
The Bulldogs got their wish last night, but even they couldn't have dreamed of what happened. Bowie State shocked Morgan State by making one big play after another early and scoring the game's first 28 points. Isaac Redman ran for a 99-yard touchdown and set a school record with 209 yards rushing, helping the Bulldogs to a 35-21 victory over the Bears at Hughes Stadium.

Delaware State 38 Millersville 6
Hornets run down Millersville

DOVER - Everything clicked. From the ground game to the air attack, the Delaware State football team was running on all cylinders. And the stifling defense that shut Florida A&M down a week ago was back. DSU put together a complete game Saturday as they pummeled Division II's Millersville 38-6 in its home opener at Alumni Stadium.

TAMPA - If football were truly a game of inches, then Florida A&M's offense would have looked pretty good against Division I-A South Florida Saturday night.
Football is really a game of yards, however, and the Rattlers struggled to get their fair share in a 37-3 loss to the Bulls in front of a crowd of 43,122 at Raymond James Stadium.

DAYTONA BEACH -- They scored the game's opening touchdown, knocked out the opponents' starting quarterback and continued a pace of takeaways that would make the school basketball team jealous.
Bethune-Cookman's defense still has its toughest tests ahead. But through two games, a unit considered the team's major question mark entering the season is the Wildcats' most dependable component.
Bethune-Cookman forced three turnovers -- including a 70-yard interception return for a TD by senior cornerback Larry Summers -- to power the Wildcats to a 31-17 triumph over Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Municipal Stadium.

Hampton 22 Howard 12
HU Pirates find control over Howard
BY DAVE JOHNSON
WASHINGTON -- Kyle Whitehurst took the official "right-place-at-the-right-time" stance, which was the humble thing to do. Yet in reality, what he did Saturday afternoon saved the game and, perhaps, Hampton University's hopes of an undefeated season.
With Howard 4 yards away from taking the lead late in the fourth quarter, Whitehurst intercepted a pass just outside the end zone and sprinted 99 untouched yards for a touchdown that deflated the Bison's side of Greene Stadium.
