Sep 7, 2005
HAMPTON, Va. – Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week Arlene Mitchell recorded a match-high 19 kills and four service aces, while her twin sister Darlene added eight kills of her own to lead the Aggies of North Carolina A&T to a 3-1 (30-24, 30-16, 31-33, 30-20) victory over host Hampton University in a MEAC volleyball match at Holland Hall. With the win the Aggies improved to 2-4 and handed the Lady Pirates (4-1) their first loss of the season.
Arlene Mitchell and North Carolina A&T opened the match on a tear as the Aggies posted 15 kills to Hampton’s nine in Game 1 to edge the Lady pirates 30-24.
The Aggies jumped out to 15-8 advantage in Game 2 and never looked back, cruising to a 30-16 victory.
Facing defeat entering Game 3, Hampton came up with several big plays down the stretch to force another game. The Lady Pirates held an early 9-7 lead before the Aggies reeled off five unanswered points to take command. The remainder of Game 3 was a see-saw battle as neither team led by more than two points. Junior outside hitter Chavanca “CeCe” Hoskins’ power kept Hampton within striking distance and freshman Alyssa Jackson sealed the game with consecutive kills to give the Lady Pirates the 33-31 win, forcing a Game 4.
North Carolina A&T left little doubt about the outcome of Game 4 with Arlene Mitchell posting eight of her 19 kills in what amounted to the final game of the evening. The Aggies snapped Hampton’s four-match winning streak with the 30-20 victory.
Hoskins led the Lady Pirates with 16 kills and 14 digs, while senior setter Sydnee Keel registered 29 assists.
In addition to the performance by the Mitchell sisters, North Carolina A&T got 29 assists from Brenden Chatman and 18 digs from Lauren Walker.
