Defensive touchdowns lift Wildcats

DAYTONA BEACH -- It took them a while to throw the knockout punch. But when Bethune-Cookman's defense landed the pivotal one-two, it was lights out for visiting Elizabeth City State on Saturday.
Finally.
The Wildcats scored two defensive touchdowns in a 16-second span of the fourth quarter to offset an uneven offensive performance and pull away for a 34-7 season-opening victory at Municipal Stadium.

WASHINGTON -- Winston-Salem State found out the hard way that it has a long way to go before competing at the Division I-AA level. Howard chased quarterback Monte Purvis around all day on its way to a 20-6 win yesterday afternoon.

Virginia State made it three straight against their cross-state rivals, pounding Norfolk State 34-6 on Saturday night on the Spartans home turf. The Trojans come out of the gates hot, scoring twice in the first 13 minutes and piling up a 27-6 lead at halftime.

Instead, he and the Hornets became the latest team to fall prey to the "television karma" which once again brought out the best in defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion South Carolina State.
