BOG wants a voice in athletic conference switchesRALEIGH (January 25, 2024) – As college athletic conferences expand and contract like accordions, the UNC Board of Governors is moving to insert itself in the process. A committee of the board that oversees all 17 UNC campuses approved a policy Wednesday – to be considered by the full board in February – that would give the UNC System President and the Board of Governors power to veto conference switches. The proposed policy would require UNC institutions to submit an annual report to UNC President Peter Hans that includes information on contracts, including grant of rights agreements for network broadcasts and name, image and likeness (NIL) contracts. The proposal would also require chancellors at UNC System campuses to provide the System President with a financial plan for any move to transfer, leave or join an athletic conference. If the President approves the plan, he or she can forward it to the Board of Governors for review. The Board of Governors can, but isn’t required to, weigh in with an up-or-down vote under the proposal. If the Board disapproves the plan, the university cannot switch conferences until the chancellor submits a plan approved by the President and the Board... publicedworks.org/2024/01/bog-wants-a-voice-in-athletic-conference-switches/

If they want a say so as to which athletic conference, we should belong to then BOG needs to pony up some of that $2 billion in "back pay" they owe us.

That COULD throw a wrench in those "Return to the MEAC" plans, although that's a last-ditch effort to keep UNC tied to NC State.

As a cynic and conspiracy theorist, I believe there must be more to this than protecting ACC schools. Why the interest in broadcasting and NIL? NIL is the going to be the new "thing" because collectives will pool so much $$. Green is the loudest color. It rings like a dinner bell to our salivating 'overseers'. I don't think they give a sheeet about what conferences we're in. They give a sheeet if they ain't getting a piece of our pie.

The Big 10 wants UNC not UNC and NCSU. So if you tie them together, then boom State is saved

If the conference collapses the ACC championship will no longer be held in Charlotte and I am sure there will be other lost revenue.

AS I have stated before, I won't be surprised if the congress does not take a hard look at collegiate athletics. Especially with the movement of athletes in the portals, and the big money floating around in the NIL. Money in college sports can be a problem. Let us hope not.

None of the committees nor none of the proposed bills are going the way the NCAA wants. That’s why we’re here now.

Again this isn't about us or UNCW or anyone else not named UNC or NCSU.

Again this isn't about us or UNCW or anyone else not named UNC or NCSU. It's about UNC and NCSU but all 16 campuses are caught in the mix. They are not going to allow everyone to move freely while denying ACC members.
