Seniors step up, lead A&T over Delaware State
1-16-05
By Jason Gaertner, Special to the News & Record News & Record
GREENSBORO -- N.C. A&T basketball coach Jerry Eaves likes to stress to his team that seniors win games.
Senior guards Steven Koger and Rechodd Carter proved their coach's point Saturday night at the Corbett Center, as the Aggies downed MEAC foe Delaware State 70-66 in overtime, in the third game of a four-game homestand.
Koger came off the bench to lead all scorers with 20 points, and Carter hit four clutch free throws in overtime to give A&T (1-3, 2-13) its first conference victory of the season, and first MEAC victory in the month of January since 2001.
A&T's victory snapped Delaware State's four-game winning streak against the Aggies.
"Carter's play in the last nine minutes and in overtime was key for us," Eaves said. "He legitimately won the game for us. He handled the ball well, ran the offense, broke the press and played great defense."
Delaware State led 30-26 at halftime, before A&T tied the score at 44 with 9:01 remaining in the second half.
Delaware State's (2-2, 4-11) final lead of the game came at 46-44 with 8:52 remaining in regulation. The Hornets would tie the score several more times, but were unable to overtake the Aggies the rest of the way.
A&T led 58-55 with 1:02 remaining, but Delaware State sent the game into overtime at 58-58, with an Aaron Williams layup and a Terrance Hunter free throw over the final 1:02.
The Aggies' season-long scoring leader, sophomore Sean Booker, who finished with 13 points, fouled out with 28 seconds remaining in regulation.
That's when Koger says he knew he had to take charge.
"When Sean went down, we knew our seniors were going to have to lead," Koger said. "Coach preaches that seniors win games, so I knew that me, being a senior, I had to step up and lead my team to victory."
Koger hit three free throws to boost A&T to a 61-58 advantage to start the overtime period, before Hunter's 3 later tied the score at 63-63 with 2:17 remaining in the extra frame.
That's when Carter nailed four straight foul shots, Michael Hayes hit two, and Koger added one free throw, to seal A&T's victory.

Good win, basically the team needs to learn how to close. Ms. Captaggie and I were in the house for the DSU win. Thought they were playing in QC. When we found out it was on the yard, we just kept going. Long time since I've seen a game in Corbett.
Congrats on the Howard win!!

I was there also with the Ms. That Jam by Koger was the best live Jam I've seen since Koger threw one down against Howard as a Freshman. I plan to go back when we play Coppin. Ain't nothing wrong with a 4pm start.

www.news-record.com/sports/local/aggies_011805.htmAggies’ elders lead winning streak 1-18-05 By Rob Daniels, Staff Writer News & Record GREENSBORO — Most college basketball programs would scoff at the notion of a two-game winning streak. But when your recent idea of a streak is one in a row, well, two straight victories constitute cause for celebration. In defeating Howard 82-72 on Monday night, the N.C. A&T Aggies posted consecutive victories for the first time since Feb. 11 and 16, 2002.
