www.wunc.org/education/2023-02-13/unc-greensboro-budget-cuts-carolina-education-collegesUniversity officials know which schools students ultimately choose when they apply but don’t accept an offer to attend. UNC Greensboro’s largest competitors are UNC Charlotte and Appalachian State University. UNC Greensboro also loses some applicants to HBCUs, which are seeing a surge in popularity; some to NC Promise schools that offer low-cost tuition subsidized by the state; and some to more selective schools like NC State University because the UNC System has made tests like the SAT and ACT optional on college applications since the pandemic began. The increased competition for students will create winners and losers. “The only institutions that will see enrollment growth over the next decade, are the elites, the flagship state universities and highly endowed privates,” Gilliam says. “Then the remainder of the sector, which is 75 to 80%, is going to see decline.” UNC Greensboro is projecting a nearly $12.4 million loss in tuition, fees and state funding next school year. That will require immediate budget cuts affecting staff and services that the university has grown over the past decade. UNC Greensboro’s undergraduate enrollment is down roughly 11% from 2020 to 2022, based on fall data. At the same time, the UNC System has changed the formula it will use to determine its request for state funding this year, shifting some priorities.

UNCG seems to be a "plain girl". Nothing wrong with her, but she just doesn't stand out. UNCC and App State have BCS football, HBCUs have tradition and culture.

Conspicuously missing from the article is any mention of A&T and our enrollment growth.

The other PWI state schools are mentioned by name. That vague reference was an intentional slight IMO.

That vague reference was an intentional slight IMO. We probably aren't mentioned because the majority of our growth is from out of state students not in-state. I don't understand the sensitivity, it is perplexing.

Conspicuously missing from the article is any mention of A&T and our enrollment growth. Mentioning us would reignite the subject of the financial punishment for our growth in this climate, which it should.

We got fined 2 million for exceeding the number of out-of-state students last year.

I think there was some question about how often it was actually enforced though.

UNCG is losing white students. That's what they are worried about.

I think there was some question about how often it was actually enforced though. www.wfae.org/education/2016-03-04/unc-chapel-hill-fined-for-exceeding-out-of-state-student-capUNC-Chapel Hill will pay a $1 million penalty for exceeding the system’s cap on out-of-state students. The Board of Governors approved the fine at its meeting Friday. For the past two years, students from outside of North Carolina have made up slightly more than 18 percent of Chapel Hill’s freshman class. When that happens, the Board of Governors decides whether to penalize a school. The university’s chancellor Carol Folt told the board it was an honest mistake. The school’s predictions were simply off. Most UNC-system schools are well below the 18 percent cap. But a couple regularly go over it. Chapel Hill had to pay a penalty in 2011, but the board gave them a pass the following year.

I wonder if the board has given us a pass before or was this our first offense.
