I like how politically savvy the chancellor is…he handles these conversations behind closed doors. Trying to embarrass the state by going to social media or the media in general will not yield desired results. ————————————— GREENSBORO — N.C. A&T Chancellor Harold Martin said that ever since a Forbes magazine article came out last year highlighting a major gap in per-student annual state funding between N.C. State and A&T, he has been advocating for that gap to be closed. “Our students deserve the same level of funding, irrespective of what level of institution ours is versus NC State, Martin said. Martin’s comments to the News & Record followed an event the university held last week. Tucker said, during the panel discussion, that he’d run the numbers again for the two schools and the gap had even increased for 2021: more than $16,000 per student for NC State and about $7,400 per student for A&T. In the article, Tucker and Adams pointed out that a handful of states, including North Carolina, reward a university’s research strength with extra money. “We had to educate the (university system) board and the president that there are inequities built into the system and you are ignoring that those inequities exist,” he said. Martin said he is expecting to see this year’s state budget reflect an incremental closing of the gap, based on his conversations with state leaders, and what was presented in the UNC System’s budget proposals to Gov. Roy Cooper, and what was included in the governor’s budget. greensboro.com/news/local/education/hbcu-inequities-north-carolina-funding-harold-martin-adam-harris-forbes-hank-tucker/article_bb01a130-c823-11ed-b471-6b2dffe28517.html

Indeed, I like his approach as well...particularly in this current political environment. I saw this in todays eEdition of my local news paper in Raleigh The News & Observer. A complelte list of funding proposals for each UNC System school is listed at the article link below. Looks like NCA&T could get about $10 million to complete renovations to Marteena...but the big prize is the new Health and Human Service building. Those of you have stay on top of the BOT meeting materials know that this is a major building as laid out by the University master plan. This $125 building would house what is now the largest college on campus (Health and Human Services) and would house programs like Nursing and the new PA program. It would be located in what will be a newly developed area of campus where the new dorm, and new student Wellness and Recreation Center building. NEW BUILDING AND RENOVATIONS AT NC A&T ▪ Marteena Hall renovations: N.C. A&T University’s Marteena Hall, which houses academic programs in math and physics, would receive $9.7 million in the 2023-2024 fiscal year under Cooper’s proposal to fund the second phase of renovations in that building. ▪ Health and Human Services building: A&T would receive $2 million in the 2024-2025 fiscal year for initial planning and preparation funds for a new Health and Human Services building on campus. The project has been authorized for a total cost of $125 million, and UNC System budget planning documents show that the system would request funds for the project through the 2028-2029 fiscal year. How is that handling the conversation behind closed doors? That happened months after closed door conversations with decision makers at different levels of state government.

So you dont think there will be any backlash from the state now that A&T held a major forum on campus about the funding shortages and that Martin is addressing it to the media?
Why is it OK to speak about it now?

Why is it OK to speak about it now? Because the state has already been educated and agree with his position. Additionally, he is talking negatively about the state or its leaders. There is a proper way to do everything and he executed it to perfection.

Do you think we still need to file a lawsuit against the UNC system or does Martin's handling of the situation suffice?

Man, I hear you ... but $2.8 Billion in back pay is a lot to walk away from.

Man, I hear you ... but $2.8 Billion in back pay is a lot to walk away from. True but we weren’t going to see that much, the MD HBCUs only got $577M to split amongst four schools over a 10 year period.

If they cheated us out of $2.8 billion in the past and we just chalk it up as a loss, what guarantee do we have that they would suddenly do right by us moving forward?

What guarantee do we have that they won’t close the school down or merge us with UNCG to save money. At the end of the day we are a state owned school and have absolutely no control over the institution…the state has 100 percent of the control. Why make enemies with people that literally control the fate of the school? Plus we aren’t going to get $2.8B, probably no more than $500M over 10 years. If you want to file the lawsuit go ahead.

So the Maryland HBCUs who successful sued their state for back pay have more control over their institutions than we do here in North Carolina?
