They are both equally important because You can't have one without the other if you want to win at any level (outside of Pee Wee basketball) . Any talented team without structure and cohesive play . Will win but not when it counts..i.e A&T this past season . A properly Coached, prepared and structured team that plays with unity and execution, even with average talent can defeat a talented team that is not properly Coached and structured to play as a unit (again A&T last season) . Coaching puts talented or less talented players in position to play to there strengths with ball movement and positioning. So you can't have one without the other if you want to win at any level NBA ,NCAA, High School and Middle School/Jr High . Coach Ross knows what he wants and needs and has been around and active in the game . I don't see him as a person/Coach that will offer a ship to a B-ball player that nobody wanted or that could not play at this level . please show me where i stated that "talent alone" is the only thing that matters? did i not state that coaching is important? i swear, folk take what someone posts and turn it into something that the poster never said... What about "Both Are Equally Important " do you not understand ? You can't have one without the other OSA it's just that simple.

Before the WPD issues a warrant, may condemn was a poor choice. Moreso I was referring how many times a so called less talent team came into Corbett and walked away victorious. If a less talented team beats a more talented what is the presumed difference? My guess would be coaching, and again that has been what most on this site has questioned the previous three seasons. Let's allow Ross and staff to construct the roster the way he sees fit to execute his style of play. This is a results oriented business so the proof will be in the pudding soon enough. just to be clear, in no way have i criticized the hiring nor the coaching of coach ross. my specific statement was regarding the current "talent level" on our roster. my original post under this thread had "nothing" to do with games in corbett last season but somehow, shiggidy gets spun into other directions that i did not initiate... I agree with you, I'm just saying why question talent being brought in when supposedly less talented teams have beaten us in recent memory. So this staff may be able to take a less talented team and mold them into a well oiled machine that goes in and beats teams with better talent. We've seen the movie already with a "all-star" cast get out there and bomb because and sub par director. Why not allow average talent come together with a better director and smaller budget put together some Oscar worthy performances. Wait and see.

Let me first repeat that I believe recruiting of talented players and coaching/developing are "equally important to me". What I don't get is why some feel others should wait to not critique the talent being brought in this year by Coach Ross. You should be able to compare now or later the talent of A&T present team with any A&T past team, HBCU team, CAA team, etc. Recruiting is only one part of coaching and can be judged now without any harm or criticism of Coach Ross's abilities to coach a team, which will probably start by some on this forum immediately after the 1st game.
For me, I prefer to wait until the 1st few conference games to judge Coach Ross on his coaching abilities, but I am not mad at anyone who chooses to critique a coach's ability to recruit at this stage of the game or compare talent to that of a past team. As some has said, a good/great coach can take a less talented team and have much more success than a bad/average coach with more talented players. Let's not confuse or mix recruiting ability of a coach with that of a coach's ability to coach/develop players or an overall evaluation of a coach's job (mentor, recruiter, trainer, coaching, staff builder, teacher in keeping players eligible, etc.).
Let's be careful not to shut down appropriate discussions too early or unjustly. This is an open forum. I have no comments on whether this present team is less or more talented than the past team. If I were to comment at all on the talent of incoming recruits, I would probably wait until the 2023 basketball recruiting season ends. Let's allow others to have a healthy debate or speculate whether a poster or Coach Ross has a keen eye for identifying, recruiting, evaluating, or comparing talented players.
In summary, you should be able to give your honest opinion about different parts of coaching separately at different points throughout the academic year. Right now, I see some folks focusing solely on the recruiting phase and not the coaching of the team or hiring of staff phase. Why wait to have this discussion, if we are nearing the end of the basketball recruiting season? This to me is similar to fantasy football or a professional league draft, where people or organizations first rate how well you or a team drafted and later evaluated on how well you or a coach coached or manged the team throughout the season. Are we going to be offended at those people because they rated the team draft without waiting to see how well the team competed throughout the season or how the coach utilized the new recruits? Recruiting and coaching are separate but equally important (good debate topic as well) and can be judged separately as well. Just my thoughts.

Pretty much confirms, at least to me, that Coach Ross has decided to completely overhaul the roster and intends to move on past last year's squad with only a couple of exceptions.

My question would be if that was the case, why would Johnson enter so late? Methinks if Ross hasn't found a veteran to replace him, it may be something different. With Harry not coming back, this is either a horrible move or a great one depending on who's left in the portal. We're losing a nationally ranked shot blocker if allowed to play at the 4.

I strongly suspect that this may have been a mutual decision. With only a year left, Johnson probably felt he would be better off at a place that wasn't starting from scratch.
On the flipside, Ross did a major evaluation on us prior to coming here and that included both guys that went into the portal and those that stayed out. He had those important conversations immediately after taking the job and the few guys who decided to stay are probably a better fit for his style of play and coaching philosophy. Others weren't and have moved on.
I also think his hiring was in part a huge desire to break completely away from the whole Alexander/Jones era so his exercising a hard reboot from the outset should not have surprised us.

I also think his hiring was in part a huge desire to break completely away from the whole Alexander/Jones era so his exercising a hard reboot from the outset should not have surprised us. A transfer this late in the basketball recruiting season by a grad student who entered the transfer portal after the regular portal window was closed in my opinion was not a mutual decision. The talked with coach happened early April, so why the wait by Johnson when your chances to get picked up increases the earlier you enter the transfer portal for a non-star. I believe this was solely a Johnson decision after seeing all the recent players committed to A&T. Being a grad player, a lot of times they transfer for increased playing time reasons, leadership role, or to be on a good or winning team their last season of their college career instead of a rebuild. Transfering due to fit or coaching philosophy would have happened much earlier, similarly to what happened at the University of Colorado when Deion Sanders had his talk with the team. Now this is not to say that Coach Ross is losing sleep over Johnson's decision, I just respectfully disagree that it was mutual. Coach knows he needs strong physical Bigs to play in the CAA from past coaching experience. Johnson was physical. Now we are up to 3 scholarships remaining for Coach Ross to add 2 or more Bigs, if my calculations are correct. Let's see what happens.

i dunno. without question i wanna see coach ross succeed as i would with "any" aggie head coach. but i am becoming a bit concerned with our overall current "talent level", not the coaching, but the "talent level". however, i was not impressed with coach brown's early signings, but his most recent signings are more in line with the talent level that i expected for our program.
so, as for coach ross, i shall remain patient with his recruiting just as i was with coach brown's recruiting. hopefully coach ross will take a page outta coach brown's book and sign a couple of "studs" in the coming weeks cuz "in my opinion", our current roster will be a well below .500 team both in and out of conference without additional help...

I don't see a scenario where Aggie Mens' Basketball will be above .500 inside or outside the conference next season. I'm sure there are many examples of first 1st year coaches having a 20 win season or even winning the conference championship. In Coach Ross' 1st season just show me you can coach. That you know what a timeout is and when to use it. That you have an offense that doesn't allow any player, to take any shot, from any where, at any time. I get that talent is very important, but equal talent against equal talent, the better coaching wins. Not necessarily gameday coaching, but coaching during the week. One of the greatest coaches of all-time once said; if I have to coach on Saturday, then I f#@k^ed-up during the week (paraphrasing). Good coaches attract good talent!
The biggest issue the last 20 years in Aggie Mens' Basketball in my mind is continuity, coaches come and go, players come and go. Every year it seems like 8 new players to mesh into a team, decent talent but not a team. This is new opportunity to fix that. I for one hope we do something different this time.

I think a few on here are underestimating, one our talent and two Coach Ross ability. I don't know what he has planned but have faith that he is building a program that can win the CAA down the road with more of a team concept.

The coach has way more experience than anyone on this board when it comes to playing, recruiting, and coaching college basketball…especially in the CAA. I don’t expect any of our new coaches to blow the doors off the CAA their first year as the head coach. That said I expect them to lay the foundation to win and improve upon that every year. Any new A&T coach has to build a program capable of winning in the CAA, while the admin increases funding and improves facilities. Gone are the days of running through a conference just because we are A&T. We will be mixing it up with schools that have coaches, players, budgets, and facilities equal to or better than our own. We playing catch up, and that doesn’t equal dominance right out the gate.
