Golf and Tennis are less expensive sports with small rosters. I assume they are economical sports that help us meet the Division I minimum number of sports. I would love to see women's soccer, but It's not cheap. Soccer usually has a roster of 25-30 players and I estimate the budget for a quality team would be between $750K-$1000K. The facilities would be another expense. The stadium probably would run around $2-$3 million and the field house facilities would run north of $10 million. I'm assuming the field house gets shared with some other sports. I believe the numbers are similar to UNCG and Elon. You can't start a program from scratch in 2023 and nickle and dime it. Also, my expectations for a new program would be top 60-40 or better.I imagine they have tabled it. The dept. has other needs and priorities. Do we have a Director of Nutrition yet?
$750K-$1000K to field a quality soccer team? are you serious? you do realize $1000K is $1 million, correct? ain't no way in hail it takes a $1 million budget to field a competitive soccer team. could you please explain what gives you the impression that it takes a $1 million budget to field a competitive soccer team? i mean, in state tuition for 2 semesters at a&t is roughly $6,700 per school "year". multiply that by 10 (maximum number of scholarships) and we're talking just $67k in scholarship costs.
i mean, how far away is $67k from $1 million? or even $100k (for partially out of state tuition) which is only "one tenth" of $1 million. certainly, the cost of supplies and equipment are "minimal" for soccer. so i don't see why a $1 million budget is even remotely necessary to field a soccer team...
I didn't say that you said it was cheaper. I was just giving a reason for why I think they're sponsoring golf and tennis. As for a soccer program, I'm getting rough numbers from the last time I checked the Dept. of Ed and College Factual site. I was looking at other programs budgets or expenses. I realize $1000K is $1 million. That is on the high end, but I believe it to be correct. Also, that is why I gave a range. I am serious. Once again, my version of quality is a Top 60 or higher ranking.
You stated "a "new stadium" definitely ain't necessary nor are new fieldhouse facilities." I respectfully disagree. You need a stadium in the year 2023 at the Div 1 level. Most serious programs have a separate stadium from UNCG to Hofstra to UNC. Even A&T has a soccer stadium in their plans. You need locker rooms. You need a training area. It probably has to be either an individual or shared fieldhouse facility.
In terms of scholarships, I assume in-state tuition is equivalent to out-of-state tuition for athletics. The required or maximum is 14 scholarships at $6,700. That is good news that would help the budget.
