But seriously, I dont understand how playing the notes loudly could be considered a bad thing. Don't you want everyone to be able to hear your music clearly from across the field?
I am not sure I can think of any situation where I want my band to be quieter than the competition.

But a lot of MEAC people don't...That's the number 1 reason that I don't like MEAC bands in the stands. Being in a Football environment, I want it to be LOUD. But hey, people like what they like. Back in the days we were known to be a small band with a big sound, but I want to be a big band with the big sound! lol This video from last year is an example of us taking the "MEAC" approach vs Southern.

Christy needs to bring back the 5th Quarter because I've got a lot of questions.

To sum this up…if A&T had a 250 piece band and we battled a SWAC 250 piece band they would be louder because they would have 30% more brass than us.
Interesting

Semi side-note (see what I did there?).
My in-laws are Jamaican. They have a reunion out in the sticks on the island every other year. Just got back from the reunion a few days ago.
They always rent big ole speakers and have a few parties. They of course play Jamaican standards and dancehall music, but they also play a ton of 50s bop music and the like. Stuff I never really appreciated in my life until I heard it coming out of those gigantic speakers at full blast. It just sounds so much better that loud.
Band could be the same deal.

That’s pretty misleading. Our staff has been open about the fact they wanted to follow this up with Lemonhead but weren’t allowed to due to time constraints. That song definitely creases. Swac bands crease 90 percent of the time, we use a lot more variety. Look at the very first clip of the thread, and read the comments. Us and Southern both creasing. Both sound good. But Southern is on another level. That’s the difference between 7 euphoniums and 30. Pound for pound I honestly believe we’re better than them in every way. Our field shows are incredible. Hence administration feels free to say we’re good enough. But it’s still 7 vs 30.

They have double the brass and are known for "Cranking", but ppl are talking like they embarrassed us. I mean what do you expect when you look at the brass difference...

At the end of the day if you have a football game with two bands performing at halftime, what percentage of spectators are really familiar enough with bandsmanship to say this band was better than that one due to technical aspects? I mean I know I ain't and nobody I hung with was. It came down to who was louder, who didn't sound like sheeet, and who had a better gimmick. After about five or so years in school the gimmicks got boring and I was looking to see who was more original with their gimmicks because most of the bands played the same popular songs and did the same dumb buck dances. But otherwise who was louder, who didn't sound like sheeet, and whose lines weren't waaay to crooked was what mattered to me and probably to the average laymen.
I'm biased as hell, but the BGMM always looks good to me.

At the end of the day, BGMM has a nice balance but, when you talk about the sound compared to SWAC...Marchingband1969 said it best on the podcast. I am glad he brought it to the forefront because, to some, it sounds like a bunch of excuses but, the bottom line boils down to resources. Give our staff credit because, they do well with what they have but, this should show them that what they give the band isn't enough. PERIOD!!!

The bottom line is what someone said earlier, instrumentation mix, not size. We have less than half the number of trumpets we need, and our arrangements mask it with mellophones but we do that well. The real deal is our mastery of the field shows. No one can touch us there AT ALL. It's pure storytelling at halftime and many cannot appreciate it.
...and for them to pull that off for the very first show of the season with a ton of freshmen.
OUTSTANDING!

I'm a BGMM fanatic and refuse to get into a debate about how loud they should play or the number of brass instruments they should have.
The BGMM staff and band members give an enormous amount of their time and energy just to entertain us Aggies and represent the University. And they do all this despite inferior facilities,an indifferent administration, limited scholarships and little support from alumni!
It appears that the only time some Aggies care about the BGMM is when they don't show up at an away game or they compete with band's from the SWAC. Our band students deserve better.
