Elon moves to regionalize scheduling as coronavirus considerationELON — With college athletics departments feeling the squeeze of the coronavirus impact in varying financial forms and degrees, one cost-saving move for Elon has become reducing the reach of its sports schedules. Athletics director Dave Blank said the Phoenix is working on a more regionalized approach to scheduling, a measure of belt-tightening geared toward minimizing shortfalls brought on by the pandemic. It’s a consideration being taken by many other schools, and overall a step that registers as not so extreme during this time of budget crunches, pay cuts, furloughs and even the shuttering of some sports altogether at certain places. There’s still much to be resolved, Blank said, amid the uncertainty that confronts college athletics in general and the fall sports season in particular. But Elon, which travels as far as Maine and New Hampshire to play conference football games, and Boston and New York for road stops in other sports as a Colonial Athletic Association league member, will be shrinking its geographical footprint. Less trips by airplane, fewer nights away from campus and more matchups against opponents closer in proximity. I've been harping on this over and over again. The Colonial Athletic Association is too widely dispersed. That also goes for FBS conferences in our neck of the woods. The ACC goes from Massachusetts to Florida (it's the Atlantic Coast Conference for real). The Sun Belt goes from North Carolina to Texas. The American Athletic Conference goes from Connecticut to Texas. There really needs to be some conference realignments taking place. There's no way such crazy distances will be financially substainable.....and I don't care how rich or funded a university is. When you're flying multiple non-revenue sports teams from Connecticut to Texas or from Massachusetts to Florida, it's gonna start adding up.....or, as it pertains to the athletic department pocketbook, SUBTRACTING!!

Yeah, but most FBS schools do have budgets that can sustain their Olympic sports, and actually what we consider non-revenue, they in most cases charge for admission. Now, it doesn't cover the expenses of the sport but it is money added to their pot nonetheless. We got excited over the opportunity for $500K payday for the CB, these cats get $5 million+ for some of these lower tier bowl games, and let's not even talk about ones on NYD and after. $5 million is third of our athletic budget.

I hate to say this VA you and I talked about this. Big south do not want there conf. to become The Negro bailout MEAC mom and pop shop. Call me racist I am keeping it 100. They are more likely to accept a conservative Religious and Spiritual Life private institutional school like ELON than a Negro HBCU struggling Student body continue on the decline SC state!!!! Same goes for NCCU!!! If Elon elects to go Big South they will get accepted immediately before any HBCU will!!!! Side note I did not realize ELON has Duke on there 2020 football schedule

I thought that Elon recently left the BS or maybe it was SCON. it was both...Elon did a short stint ('99-2003) in the Big South and then was a member of the SoCon from 2003-2014

Elon jumping conferences may be a model for us. Did they switch for better football exposure or reduced cost? Or both? I don't think we will be in the Big South as long as we were in the MEAC. And if the Big South doesn't build more stability in its football program we will be moving on sooner than later.

Could a more travel conscious Elon mean more games with them in the future in Basketball and Football?
