Does anyone know the history behind a lot of HBCUs having huge football stadiums that they can’t consistently fill outside of homecomings & rivalry games? Was there a time when attendance was such that they were being filled every week and it’s just fell off over the decades, or was it done to make sure homecoming and rivalry game revenue was maximized? Jackson St being an example.

From my understanding all schools such as T who moved up to the FCS class had to have stadiums that accommodate 17,000 or more fans.
Recently, I have been to FCS stadiums like Gardner Webb and Charleston that does not meet this criteria.
Very confusing. Maybe I missed something because I am not the only person who thought the minimum seating capacity was 17,000.

But as a kid and a player War Memorial Stadium was almost always standing room only when A&T played there . I transferred out in 73 so I can not speak on anything after that .

That's a good question, and I've wondered the same thing, too. I will have to see if I can find that figure in an old press guide or game program.
My educated guess would be seating for around 10,000...which does not include SRO.

But, does anyone know the criteria for stadium capacity when a team moved up to 1-AA which is FCS now?
Several people I know have been discussing this because we were under the impression that all stadiums had to hold a minimum of 17,000 fans when they moved up.
We all, 6 people, can't be mistaken because we all remember this criteria when A&T moved up.
Evidently, something changed over the years because most stadiums don't meet the criteria.

Each school must have a stadium in place large enough to meet NCAA minimum attendance requirements (at least 15,000 average home attendance, once every two years) for FBS standards. That means a school must have an existing stadium that seats a minimum of 15,000 fans.

That is not counting the standing crowd . Hell, there would be several hundred fans standing around under the stadium at the concession stands. The capacity may have been reported 7,000 but I bet we double that for Homecoming. This was before the fire marshal even knew we held games at Memorial Stadium. Lol

Jackson St being an example. Most HBCUs played in Municipal Stadiums years ago. Some still use local stadiums. Campus stadiums were very small with little seating. Go to the archives of the News and Record and read the headlines about the attendance of games at War Memorial before and during the sixties.

I don't think there is a standard for FCS anymore. I think the 15k is for FBS which still is not enforced.
