Why do NCAA track athletes change number for each track events? For example I saw Kayla White 217 for 1 events and then the next week a different number. I would love for them to keep the number and then if there good like Kayla retire the number in the rafter or at the stadium. I wonder if Edwin Moses(Morehouse) got something hung up.

Yes Ed Moses tunic has been retired . The numbers are not really that important . It's just and identification number so that they can keep track of the runners in a database .

The numbers are assigned to identify the athletes during the race or event... their uniforms do not have numbers...A number on their thigh is usually the lane number or the order in which they line up if more than 8. if she had 217 on then it was just to identify her in the race. That is my off the cuff take on it.
