Never could figure how they arrived at a ranking which had NCAT ahead of Alcorn. At the time A&T had no NCAA tournament wins at the D1 level and Alcorn had 3 to go with several NIT wins. Head to head ... Alcorn won by over 20 points in Greensboro . Just saying

Personally, I believe that they are looking at our overall body of work through the decades up until that time. You have to remember that we were a Division II powerhouse since the early 1950s, and played in probably the toughest conference on that level, considering segregation..
They also rated us higher than UNC-Charlotte and Jacksonville University, whom had both played in the Elite 8 and Final Four, I believe.

When A&T won the MEAC tournament 7 straight times and was MEAC champs 7 straight times......although we didn't win a single game in the tournament, that 7-pack is something that has been rarely done by any school in any conference. The point you make about Alcorn beating A&T 1 time in Greensboro by 20 points......does that really matter in the grand scheme of this discussion? I think you put that in just to put that in.....

I believe they are looking at the overall records and accomplishments at the period of time discussed.
The CIAA teams in the 50's - early 70's had great, great talent just as the ACC and other conferences.
The CIAA Basketball Tournament was the Black MECCA of all HBCU sports during that period. The CIAA Tournament had more NBA scouts in attendance than the ACC and other big time conferences.
A&T under coaches Cal Irvin and Don Corbett had outstanding teams year after year that won conference championships on a regular basis.
It was a given without any hesitation that we would win 20 plus games a year under both coaches Irvin and Corbett.
A&T's teams during the periods mentioned played stiffer competition then, than they do now.
A&T deserved to be recognized as one of the top teams in the nation. Our records indicates that our program over an extended period of time during the time documented proves that.
Alcorn might have made a little noise briefly but they don't have the winning tradition that we "had" during that period.

A little noise huh... 3-6 in NCAA as D1. But if the rankings were based on D2... That may answer my question ...yea, the win v NCAT was not relevent but that season ASU also beat SC St - Howard-FAMU by over 30 points and Five PWC (5-1) and 1-1 in NCAA.. Don't doubt what you say about pro scouts and CIAA however, Willis Reed Zelmo Beatty, Larry Wright, the Short brothers (Jackson State) Ed Manning Bob Love and my favorites Willie Norwood Larry Smith all had long NBA careers.. So the scouts were everywhere Looking at NAIA Records from 1950 Tenn ST won in 1957-58-59: Tx So was runner up in 56. Grambling 61 PV 62 Central State 65 &68.;Kentucky state 71-72-73; UMES 73(great team) finished 2nd. Alcorn 2nd in 74, Coppin 76 Tx So 77...Ala state 2nd in 1980.. Others school were D1 by then. A look at NCAA D2 will have to wait...

Not doubting Alcorn's record and accomplishments in basketball nor the SWAC players that made it to the NBA.
A&T's and Alcorn's basketball programs were cited in Street and Smith for a particular period of time. A&T was rated higher than Alcorn in basketball for the periods documented.
Street & Smith are revered throughout the world for reporting and documenting facts on various sports.

I’m feeling that I was negligent for not posting Alcorn State’s page, so I will do that shortly.
