We would need a $20-25 million dollar athletic budget at a very minimum for that to happen. Working toward that goal over maybe the next 7-10 years is most probably what he was referring to as part of that overall 2035 preeminance university vision that was laid out last year unless someone or a group of someones have some very deep and very generous pockets from which they wish to share.

Correct. This ain't happening anytime soon.

Honestly, this is not new. In my conversations with the AD, this has always been a goal of his for this athletic program!

The R1 research designation is the bigger and more attainable goal right now.

Honestly, this is not new. In my conversations with the AD, this has always been a goal of his for this athletic program! This is new. The AD having a dream and the chancellor saying it publicly are two entirely different things. I believe if Martin puts it into the strategic plan, will happen somehow. Trust me, if he said it out loud, this is different, way different.

Given what happened with Winston we'd run the risk of ending up like FAMU when they made the attempt. It would be all good so long as Martin was Chancellor but a new Chancellor with a different purpose could easily have us spiraling backwards.
FAM still hasn't quite recovered. I don't know if it was all due to the FBS attempt but it wouldn't surprise me.

FAMU was going through all kinds of financial scandal at the time correct?

Martin is smarter and will make sure he has done due dilligence if in fact this is true. On your first point, a different chancellor could be a game changer UNLESS you have a strong Board of Trustees that buys into the vision and selects a new chancellor capable of carrying it out. If you have a strong chancellor-weak board system, all bets are off.

That's the thing. He did his due diligence at Winston when they made the move but as soon as he left it fell apart. If he was at Winston today they'd probably be a regular top-three conference team in a number of sports.
He's the glue.
The Board can only justify a move like that so far. Even if every member of the Board is all for it if the money isn't there or starts to look funny...

I wonder what drives the fascination with going FBS. I get that it is the highest level, but I wonder if energy and efforts could be better focused.
