BLACKSBURG, Va. (January 18 , 2019) – Duane Ross, North Carolina A&T’s director of track and field programs, talked this week about some of his star student-athletes having a chip on their shoulder.
Senior Michael Dickson was not one of the athletes mentioned, but there may be a good reason to add him. Dickson won 60-meter hurdles at the Hokie Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech Friday at Rector Field House. The N.C. A&T men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed during the first day of the event.
Junior Madeleine Akobundu continued to strive for the women as she won the 60mh for the second straight week as the women had four top-5 finishes. The men had seven athletes finish in the top-5 including Dickson.
Dickson has had some cringe-worthy moments on big stages at MEAC and NCAA championship events during his indoor and outdoor careers with some did not finishes and disqualifications. But based on the start he is off to this season those moments are far behind him. Dickson has crossed the finish line first every time he has competed in the 60mh this season.
He won the preliminary and the final at the Virginia Tech Invitational last week. Dickson did similar on Friday. In the 60mh prelim at the Hokie Invite, Dickson ran a qualifying-best 7.78. He slowed a bit in the final by taking gold with a time of 7.79. Dickson is the defending MEAC indoor champion in the 60mh. Freshman Cedric McGriff ran a season-best 7.97 to finish third in the 60mh. Junior Robert Miller finished fourth in 8.03.
