Coach Small: "Well as you mentioned those guys went through some transitions, as far as Coach Lee and Coach McNeil, and also we are now in the process of making a change in our secondary with Coach Hart. That’s going to be about it. We brought in Coach (Ken) Schoolfield to run the offense as the lead coordinator and we evaluated Coach (Chennis) Berry up to become the run game coordinator. Coach (Travis) Oliver is going to be working with the safeties and Coach (Marvie) Dingle is going to working with the tight ends." *****
If I'm reading this right Coach Berry was promoted??? WTF??? and Coach Hart was reassigned. That's some Bull.

That "evaluated" should read "elevated" and yes, Small did make it sound like he was giving Berry a promotion.

The "upward" move with Berry is not what it appears to be. It tells me that Schoolfield is taking over the reigns of the offense in it's entirety, line and all. Schoolfield is now basically a defacto head coach who is only responsibility is with offensive football.
That is a a dramatic change in philosophy from what was happening with McNeill. As for Hart, it appears clear in the interview that Alonzo Lee wanted him out because they could not agree on what was supposed to be going on on the field.
I think he was viewed as an outsider from the start and a leftover from Hayes' less than stellar coaching staff and never part really was a part of Small's long term plan. Once Hart stepped outside of Lee's system, real or imagined, he was gone.

Yeah, that' what I got from the conversation also. Sounds too me like Lee and Hart butted heads one time to many. Like Ice Cube said "big bank take little bank."

I would still like to know how coach Hart(an assistant coach) was able to get a contract? Not just any contract but one that made it impossible for Small to fire him when he took over as head coach. To me this is un-heard of in college football. Can anyone out there explain this?

Pretty simple. When Charlie Davis fired Hayes in 2002, he let all the coaches go except Hart. He had to keep someone there to hold the propgram in place until he found a head coach.
When Small came in as head coach, Davis told him he had to Keep Hart on because he had remained behind and held most of the players here and kept things going. Small decided to re-up him for another 1-year deal after the 2003 run.
But this year, there were numerous breakdowns in coverage and in communication between he and Lee over defensive calls. Hart had long coveted the DC job when Hayes was here so when Small came in that wasn't even gonna happen with someone as good as Lee around.
Now both he, Davis, and that whole situation are history.
