Educators, community join to ensure students don't go hungry after storm By Brant Wilkerson-New bwilkerson-new@greensboro.com Apr 16, 2018
Half an hour before Mount Zion Baptist Church opened its doors for lunch on Monday, a woman wondered aloud if she was in the right place. “I’ve got to take care of my babies,” she said, pulling on a hooded sweatshirt as she blended into the crowd headed for a side door of the massive facility. A family in Southeast Guilford T-shirts streamed in, working just in front of young men in N.C. A&T football jackets and alongside a woman in an Eastern Guilford football sweatshirt. Too many sorority and fraternity letters to count packed the room, next to those from the church’s Young and Dangerous group for young adults. The steady waves of rain and blasts of howling wind came before nightfall and lingered into the darkness they brought over the east side of the city into the wee hours of Monday morning, but by 10 a.m., they had been replaced by waves of volunteers beginning the process of getting Greensboro back on its feet after a tornado downed trees, destroyed schools and left thousands without power.
