NCAA picks 20 football coaches for advancement program

The NCAA has chosen 20 ethnic minority football coaches to participate in the second NCAA Advanced Coaching Program, which is a component of the NCAA Coaches Academy.
The NCAA established the Coaches Academy in 2003 to address the critical shortage of ethnic minorities in head coaching positions in football. The program's mission is to assist ethnic minority coaches in excelling in head-coaching positions, to enhance and strengthen the skills that many ethnic minority coaches currently possess and to provide exposure and networking opportunities for those coaches.
The following individuals have been selected to participate in the 2005 NCAA Advanced Coaching Program:
Bryan A. Applewhite, running backs coach, University of Wyoming
Carey I. Bailey, assistant coach, Oklahoma State University
Ronald L. Burton, assistant coach-defensive line, U.S. Air Force Academy
Earnest E. Collins Jr., assistant coach, University of Kansas
Renato Diaz, assistant coach, Widener University
Frederick T. Farrier, associate head coach/offensive coordinator, Shaw University
James G. Franklin, assistant coach/recruiting coordinator, University of Maryland, College Park
Henry C. Frazier III, head coach, Prairie View A&M University
William D. Inge, co-defensive coordinator, University of Northern Iowa
Lyndon F. Johnson, linebacker coach/ recruiting coordinator, University of Connecticut
Ernest T. Jones, defensive coordinator/defensive backfield coach, Oberlin College
Brian Jones, assistant coach, University of Missouri, Columbia
Aaron E Kelton, assistant coach, defensive coordinator/recruiting coordinator, Virginia State University
Lawrence B. Livingston, head coach/offensive line coach, University of Texas at El Paso
Michael J. Lynn Jr., head coach, Bowie State University
Randy Melvin, assistant coach, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick
Curtis E. Modkins, assistant coach, Georgia Institute of Technology
Larry D. Porter, assistant coach, Oklahoma State University

George M. Small, head coach, North Carolina A&T State University
The 20 coaches chosen for the Advanced Coaching Program will receive three days of intense training in areas such as communication, fiscal responsibilities, building a successful program, moral/ethical considerations and academic issues.
The Advanced Coaching Program will be held January 7-9, 2005, in Louisville, Kentucky, and precedes the American Football Coaches Association convention.
