BATON ROUGE — Grambling State University President Willie Larkin resigned Thursday at the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors meeting on the Louisiana Tech University campus in Ruston.
The announcement came following an executive session by the board to evaluate Larkin. Interim ULS President Dr. Dan Reneau said Larkin's letter of resignation had been accepted.
In brief comments to the board, the university president suggested he was not a quitter, "but there comes a time and place when decisions have to be made." Larkin said he had enjoyed his time serving at the university and that "Grambling State University will succeed and it will survive."
Larkin thanked the board and said he believes the school is heading in the right place. He also encouraged students, faculty and staff in their work at GSU.
Speculation swirled after HBCU Digest reported Larkin's likely departure, writing, "Multiple sources within and around the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors have confirmed that Grambling State University President Willie Larkin will either resign or be fired this week." HBCU is an acronym for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
The resignation came less than a year after Larkin took the helm at the university. The tumultuous tenure saw Larkin take the job on the heels of Grambling losing its nursing program.
There appeared to be a growing disconnect between some faculty members and the administration just months into his presidency. In February, Grambling's Faculty Senate voted "no confidenc"' in Larkin, citing "a vague administrative response to pressing issues such as falling enrollment, fundraising and the loss of the school’s nursing program."
The resolution revolved around what the Faculty Senate deemed as past failed leadership and sustained instability throughout the university. The document asked Larkin to evaluate members of the current administration and called for support for all degree programs and resources. In a response letter from Larkin, he expressed his administrative duties in personnel matters and stated he would monitor concerns and make changes if warranted.
