UNC board roiled by controversy over president search
Posted 5:52 a.m. today Updated 39 minutes ago
Cary, N.C. — UNC Board of Governors Chairman John Fennebresque faces an increasing number of calls to step down even as he plans to pitch a finalist to be president of the UNC system. Multiple sources tell WRAL News that Margaret Spellings, a former U.S. Secretary of Education under President George W. Bush, is scheduled to be interviewed by the full UNC Board of Governor's today. She currently heads of the George W. Bush Center in Dallas. The board is searching for someone to take the place of outgoing UNC President Tom Ross, a former judge and college president who was pressured to resign by the end of the year. Spellings is the first person that an 11-member search committee has brought to the full board. The board issued a statement Friday afternoon saying it would be inappropriate to comment on the "confidential" search process. Although board members have said in interviews and in emails obtained by WRAL they don't have a problem with Spellings herself, they have issues with the process used to tap her as the apparent front runner.
