I have to say I was one who felt sometype of way about the Machine's show at UNC, but after talking to a UNC football Hall of Famer, I have changed my opinon. He said in all his years at UNC and he is on the sidelines every game, he hasn't seen a visiting band play at halftime. So that's the history part of it and I think if most of us had known that, there would be Zero complants. Then he also said that he had never seen a band get the attention that we got and a standing ovation from the whole crowd in all his years. I guess if forgot that they don't look at the halftime show like we do at HBCU's. Great job and always Proud of the Blue and Gold Marching Machine!!

Your apology accepted; I don't know about the history but this was a great moment for all.

If he liked the performance so much, tell that UNC hall of famer to donate some money to A&T. I'd be willing to bet: -He probably wouldn't do it -He'd probably pass out if one of his kids told him he or she would enroll at A&T When I posted my argument a few days ago, I was not arguing the historical significance of the band going to UNC. I NEVER ONCE said they had no business marching at halftime. I had a problem with what they were marching about. I thought there was too much praising of UNC and not enough for our own school. If A&T didn't spell UNC, didn't play with UNC's band and just gave their normal, spectacular halftime performance....they would've gotten the same praise from that person (remember, he said he'd never seen a visiting band perform, regardless of whether we fused with UNC's band or not) The reason that hall of famer had never seen something like that before was because he likely never gave an HBCU any serious thought BEFORE, DURING, OR AFTER his years at UNC. Maybe I wrong; maybe this dude will come to HBCU games in the future. Maybe he'll bring his kids to HBCU games. Maybe he'll donate money to A&T. Maybe he'll tell his kids to consider going to HBCUs...... .....that's a lot of maybes...... My concern was that the festivities at halftime were getting all those young black kids in the stands to march.........right to UNC. Much props to our marching band, which takes a seat to no one.

I don't think that culture was even considered in a lot of the comments made, and the difference in how things are done there or anywhere from how we do here (@ A&T). One kid from UNC said it all when he told an AGGIE, "we're not used to seeing people during our halftime show, they usually take that time to go to concessions". That speaks volumes about the cultures, where we all know that it's for the love of football and the band where we're from and we don't want to miss either one. There the bands provide some entertainment but they are a bigger part of school spirit. Halftime shows usually allow a small amount of time to the band, and then off the field for the teams to warm up, here both bands uses as much as possible of the time and it's all about them. Here they have been and will always be a part of the HBCU Football Life.

I'd be willing to bet: -He probably wouldn't do it You could say the same thing about a lot of us. -He'd probably pass out if one of his kids told him he or she would enroll at A&T That might be true for half of the crowd there. The other half just got their eyes opened. I thought there was too much praising of UNC and not enough for our own school.
Just what did we say to praise UNC that has you so bothered? The announcer did just as much hyping of A&T as he always does. He said they wouldn't come all this way without showing UNC some love as they spelled UNC, and he said they need a little help from the Tar Heels to break it down right before they played and danced together. I seriously doubt anybody took that literally. Was there something else I missed? As I said before, ALL of that has been done with other schools before at some point during the game. If A&T didn't spell UNC, didn't play with UNC's band and just gave their normal, spectacular halftime performance....they would've gotten the same praise from that person (remember, he said he'd never seen a visiting band perform, regardless of whether we fused with UNC's band or not) You're missing the big picture. We did a normal, spectacular halftime performance at Wake Forest a few years ago. I can't find a single clip. We did a normal spectacular halftime performance at App St. two years ago. As far as I know, one person from App St. posted a video. Our own video has gotten 20,000 views in 2 years. We did a halftime and show at UNC, included their band, and our video has gotten nearly triple that in 4 DAYS. Tons of UNC fans are posting their own videos and writing about it. Newspapers ware writing articles and linking to it. Our Macy's performance didn't get nearly this much attention. Do you know how many people talk trash about our HBCU bands? How they say we can't play, all we do is dance and play loud and sloppy. Some of them are speaking out of racism, some just repeating what they've been told, and some are speaking from real experience with sorry HBCU bands. You're not going to change a racist, but everybody out there isn't one. For the ones that aren't, this video and the attention it's getting will open up a lot minds - way more than the Wake Forest, App State, or Elon performances have done. My concern was that the festivities at halftime were getting all those young black kids in the stands to march.........right to UNC. I'm not following your logic. UNC just finished doing the same kind of show they do every week. Then we went on, did what WE do every week, and brought UNC into it. And we made sure a TON of people see it. It's obvious both schools are good at what they do. It's also obvious who does what. I mean seriously, who's going to look at our video, and say I want to go to UNC? And if they do, we really want them?

Tony, I could care less of people looking at the video......I'm concerned about the YOUNG BLACK CHILDREN AT THE GAME who saw the subliminal messaging and are being convinced UNC is the place to be (MORESO THAN A&T) for them to go to school.
The real problem is that there are many black folks who are Tarheel fans. They love good ole UNC so much (home of Michael Jordan as well as to home of sham African-American classes) that they can't get it in their psyche that they will use any opportunity to suck our black bones dry.
The more and more black kids go to white schools, the smaller the enrollments HBCUs become=====>HBCU doors close, "UNITY DOORS" at good ole UNC or white school U open.

We should care about how many people view this video ,it's called "Branding" , "Marketing" , "Exposure" . The best part about it is we are getting all of this for free . 2. There are a lot of blacks who are Tarheel fans for a lot of different reasons . One being that Dean Smith was one of the first coaches in the south to play African-Americans way before Michael Jordan came on the scene . 3. Our enrollment was around 7,000 when I came to A&T , we are now just under 11,000 and we are the largest HBCU in the nation , go figure .

Kids see our band spell other schools name's at least once every other year. Honestly I've never heard it mentioned a second time before, and I don't think most kids at the game are even reading what the band spells. Nobody on this board seems to be aware that it's pretty common, so I doubt it left much of an impression with the kids there either. This is the first time I've ever seen bands do a joint field show, and I think it was a good look for BOTH schools. I think UNC's band probably bored most of the young black kids, and they loved our band. If you want to talk about subliminal messages, I think you should be looking at the scoreboard and not the band.

Here we go again...I had hoped that this conversation had ended. Let it go! Exactly. We beat this to death in the other thread. Some thought it was an historic event for both institutions, some think we sold out to the man for showing gratitude. No one is going to change their opinion on this.

There were subliminal messages in my opinion, real or not so real For example, Chancellor Martin is perhaps one of the most accomplished chancellors in the US. Why was he not offered the Chancellorship at UNC or NC State? I am sure Dr. Martin loves A&T but we got a steal of a deal at NCAT because he was not offered a position that he well deserved at UNC or NC State. It's not only unfair that Chancellor Martin was not given the opportunity to lead at the more popular UNC schools. The last time checked (2011) the salaries of the chancellors in the UNC system, A&T's chancellor's salary was 1/2 that of UNC Charlotte's chancellor. Just something to consider when evaluating subliminal messages. Unity is great and may lead to greater equality somehow, however, in my corporate life, I have only seen displays of unity when there is noting of value at stake. Last Thought....Aggie Pride is Never Second.....On to Elon!!!

So, you're concerned about our performance boosting black enrollment at UNC. Meanwhile, the BGMM is more concerned about boosting diverse enrollment in both the band and at the entire school, while dispelling the myth that HBCUs are for blacks only.
That is where we differ.
Good day, sir.
