GREENSBORO – The second time around proved to be much better for North Carolina A&T freshman quarterback Hasaan Klugh.
After a rough outing in his first career start on Oct. 4 in Atlanta, Klugh completed his last 12 passes in helping the Aggies defeat the Hampton Pirates 31-14 last Thursday at Aggie Stadium.
His improved play at quarterback earned him MEAC Rookie of the Week honors Monday afternoon. Klugh joins running back Marquell Cartwright as A&T conference rookie of the week winners this season after Cartwright earned the accolade on Sept. 28 following his 135-yard, two-touchdown performance at Howard.
Klugh finished Thursday’s game with 167 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions on 13-for-17 passing. On 3rd-and-10 from the Hampton 37-yard line in the third quarter, he tossed a pass over the head of a Hampton defender into the arms of Denzel Keyes for a first down that led to the Aggies tying the game at 14 thanks to a 2-yard Cartwright touchdown. In the fourth quarter he completed a 20-yard pass to Keyes on a 2nd-and-8 from the Aggies 37 that led to a 23-yard Cody Jones field goal to give A&T a comfortable 31-14 lead.
“To throw a (freshman) quarterback in the fire against South Carolina State down in Atlanta was a tough situation,” said A&T head coach Rod Broadway. “I thought he fought and gave us pretty good effort, and I thought he came back last week against Hampton and showed some improvement. He’s a warrior in a lot of ways. He is going to grow and get better.”
Klugh has played in five of the Aggies six games this season. Two of those games were Aggies blowouts where he replaced starting quarterback Kwashaun Quick. Klugh took over the position for Quick in the second half of A&T’s win over Howard on Sept. 27 when Quick left the game with a knee injury. Klugh started the following two games.
He has thrown for 312 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 31-for-60 passing. Klugh and the Aggies travel to Dover, Del., this week to face the Delaware State Hornets at Alumni Stadium at 2 p.m.
